Structure Fire in Burlington’s Old North End
The Burlington Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire at 52 Peru Street on Sunday, September 8, 2013 at 11:59 AM. Initial crews arrived on scene within three minutes to find a workshop behind the residence with heavy fire venting from all openings. Two 2-1/2” attack lines were deployed from Engine 2 and Engine 1 to knock down the large volume of fire. Two 1-3/4” lines were then advanced into the structure to complete extinguishment and overhaul. 16 Burlington Firefighters responded to this incident and the fire was controlled within ten minutes. No firefighters or civilians were injured. The building was unoccupied at the time of this incident.
This building is a one-story wood framed accessory structure located at the rear of the lot owned by Ms. Peggy Luhrs. The building value is unknown. Damage is estimated at $20,000.
The rapid response of the Burlington Fire Department is credited with preventing the fire from spreading to adjacent homes. A passerby had seen the fire and notified 911.
The cause of this fire has been determined to be incendiary. This incident is under investigation by the Burlington Fire Marshal’s Office with the assistance of the Burlington Police Department and the Vermont State Police Fire Investigation Unit. Anyone with information about this fire is requested to contact the Burlington Fire Marshal’s Office at 864-5577.

I have been interested in this shed as well, especially as it is feet from my back stairs. I am concerned that it is a fire hazard, as well as a home for many animals. Animals (squirrels) are also dragging pieces of pink insulation into my yard regularly and I think it is from that structure. I realize that over the winter not much would be done with it, but not that it is spring, it would be nice to have it cleaned up. the whole area around the shed could really use some help. I understand the fire was started by arson. thanks. Kelly 16 Murray Street.
