This comment is not very helpful. Insufficient description of what occurred. Was the biker going east, or west? Did s/he/it use appropriate hand signals? Was s/he/it wearing a helmet? (Too many bikers around here don't...) What's an LPI signal change? (And, thinking about this, weren't 17 intersections in CH recently converted to "no turn on red" to meet bikers needs? and, why doesn't Chapel Hill fine bikers who don't wear helmets? and ditto for bikers on public streets who fail to stop at traffic lights and stop signs?... For every one bike rider who seems to follow the rules there are at least a half dozen who do not...)

LPI will not provide any benefit to bicycles, as bicycles must obey vehicular signals. There is no separate signal and bicycles must stay stopped (right turn on red is not permitted) until a green signal is shown. The Town will notify Planning and the Bike/Ped committee about pavement markings at and approaching the intersection.

When absolutely no traffic is going west on Cameron St or turning south on Pittsboro St, the light going east on Cameron stays red for 2 minutes or so before allowing 2-4 cars go through. Because it gets so backed up, to get through that light takes anywhere between 4-6 minutes. This time period has increased since construction on pipes has begun on Cameron. Please resolve this soon as it makes navigating Chapel Hill a living nightmare.

The Town is planning on building a protected cycletrack along Cameron Ave in 2024 to reduce bike/vehicle conflicts. Adding a Leading Pedestrian Interval (LPI) would only work for pedestrians crossing. We have documented this issue and are closing this request.
