I posted this observation five days ago, and now I have pictures and video of a traffic accident scene yesterday. I hope no one was hurt.

If people cannot learn the Right of Way, the light could signal green for Sodom and Grassy Hill separately. An elegant, fast and cheap, solution. I don't see why a study would even need to be done. We would simply decide how many fatalities and injuries should be the trigger and reprogram the lights. The same for Dogburn and Dogwood, Race Brook, any place this problem occurs.

Back when the school was being proposed for this area, it had been mentioned it was on someone's plans in the future to adjust the alignment of grassy hill.

The challenge I've had here is I go from grassy hill to Sodom lane(straight). If I'm the first or second car stopped, the lane to the right is for the right turn onto 34 headed towards New Haven. Frequently people intending to go straight then line up beside me in the turn lane - this blocks the people who plan to go right and creates an issue when the light turns green - people tend to assume that everyone in that lane will turn left even if their turn signal is off. When I go straight, left turners in front of me get surprised, as well as the people in the right turn lane who realize that we are on a collision course. I will try to line up towards the right side of the lane to make it clearer I am not turning

Lane marking would help clear up that ambiguity - I'm fine with the right line as (right or straight) and the left as left only - if it is marked that way.

Long term the answer is three lanes on grassy hill or moving either grassy hill or sodom lane (and the private driveway that further creates confusion)... But we have a legacy of bad intersections from when people were riding horses at 10 mph...

The location marker for this issue is WAAAY off - the actual location is close to a mile further west on Route 34

If you get directions to my house from Mapquest it will tell you to go the wrong way on a one way road, so I am not surprised the map is bad.

One other detail is the right turn from grassy hill to 34 is "no turn on red", so if I'm going straight and use that lane, I'm not really "blocking" a right turn, since they aren't allowed to turn anyhow - but that is ignored a lot.

If they changed it to be only one at a time (Sodom vs grassy hill) you'll then get traffic backing up on 34 all the way to the Walmart driveway, and get people stuck in that intersection - which seems to also be very accident prone. There isn't room on Sodom lane to add a left turn only lane without acquiring private land - but that would help a lot.

yer right above, but there is really not enough room for it to be done properly, that's why people have been doing it wrong for so long, the State DOT is LONG overdue re-realining the intersection properly, it thier fault but too fast drivers & non signalers make it worse!
