Hello,
1. I'm a resident and I'd like to request a tree in front of my property. How can I request a tree?
The Adopt a Tree application is open to homeowners that would like to request a tree. As noted in the application, tree supply is limited and it may take up to a year for requests to be fulfilled. Tree sites must be surveyed by the City's forester to ensure compliance with Jersey City Forestry Standards (pp. 10-20). Please note that submitting an application is not a guarantee. The application is designed to collect requests for tree plantings. It is ultimately the City's discretion when and where trees are planted. Additional details regarding the requirements and stipulations of this program are provided in the application.
2. I'm a resident and I'd like to plant a tree in front of my property. How can I plant a tree?
In order to plant a tree in front of your property, you must file a permit (attached) with the Division of Forestry. All private tree planting on City property must follow the Jersey City Forestry Standards. This includes contacting utilities, hiring a contractor, creating a tree bed, planting the tree, and guaranteeing it for two years. A recommended species list is in the standards, but final species approval will have to come from the City forester. All of these requirements are detailed in the Jersey City Forestry Standards.
3. I'm a developer and I am required to plant a tree. What do I need to do?
Developers are required to file a permit with the Division of Forestry per the City's zoning code. You must follow the Jersey City Forestry Standards and work with the Planning Board to understand your unique development requirements. As a developer, you will be responsible for all aspects of the tree planting process. All of these requirements are detailed in the Jersey City Forestry Standards.
4. I am a resident and I have a concern about the health of a tree. How do I report my concern?
Contractors are responsible for maintenance guarantees. Maintenance of trees can include watering, pruning, weeding, stake removal, and dead tree replacement. The City works with contractors to fulfill maintenance requests. You may alert us of maintenance issues through See Click Fix.
Thank you.
