This has been an ongoing problem in Ansonia and I am sure many other communities. Sidewalks are in horrible condition (I could name several neighborhoods) and the response given is "residents are responsible for maintaining the sidewalks in front of their property."

That is lovely, truly. It let's Ansonia wash it's hands of the responsibility for public safely. However it is clear by the horrible and treacherous condition of so many city sidewalks that either homeowners are totally unaware the sidewalks are not part of the road and are to be maintained by them OR simply don't care or lack funds to make the repairs.

Either Ansonia needs to fix it's sidewalks or notify homeowners of their responsibilities and costs of violation. People will be hurt and Ansonia will be named in suits even if they do have a loophole to escape.

Very true. A simple letter to homeowners reminding them (or informing them if they think it's the city's responsibility) that they must maintain and repair the sidewalks in front of their home would go SO far... but never happens.
