Description

People in the area of the YMCA from Congress Ave. to Rte. 50 are driving at speeds of at least 50MPH and this is not safe due to people turning in the the YMCA and then there is a cure in the road between Newark & Albany Streets. People who are turning into the YMCA's West Ave. Entrance tend to not slow down until they are already into the YMCA's parking lot. They also refuse to turn on their turn signals in advance so drivers know they are turning and can give them the necessary space to do so. People are either not using turn signals or they just turn it on for 2 seconds while they are in the middle of the turn. I am not sure of the exact distance required by law for activation of a turn signal but I do know that turning it on when you get to your turn or while you are already in the middle of the turn are illegal and unsafe. I lived across from the property that is now the YMCA from 1977 to 1986 and there has always been a speeding problem on this section of the road. At one time a drunk driver was speeding down the road and crashed into my parent's fence that had just been built. That was back in 1981 but it shows you that 30 years later people are still driving unsafely and inconsiderately. I say drop the speed limit to 15MPH from Congress Ave. To Newark St. This would also make it safer fro students walking from the High School to the YMCA. I don't even think there is a SCHOOL ZONE in effect in the area of the High School. As the West Avenue area of the city grows it draws more people who just don't give a @#$% about others and are in a hurry, They are late for their next accident. I say no more studies by the City Engineer or others, just do something about the problem and don't waste tax payer's money.
