I don't think you can prevent people from hanging out on public property like the library, but it would help a lot if 1.) There were a few garbage cans scattered around this location, since there is always trash everywhere on the ground, and 2.) Have a police officer go by there often to make sure things are ok, especially in the time between when school lets out and 6pm or so.

A beautiful day last week, and no one on the Crane library green except for a homeless person sleeping right in the middle of it. As much as I am for helping the needy, the combination of free beds overnight, hot meal for dinner and breakfast, and free lunch at the Chruch of the Presidents make the permanent "homeless" lifestyle an attractive option for people who are not even from Quincy. They also commit petty crimes like purse snatching and mugging at the T. I fully support the mayor and Beale street in cleaning up the whole mess. The renovation cannot succeeed with this issue unresolved.

By the way, the free meals and the free beds in the previous post are my reference to Father Bill's. They need to either self police their clients better or they need to be shown the way out of Quincy. I know of no neighborhoods anywhere in Quincy (or any other towns around us) that would welcome FB's. Quincy has been given the crap cards for too long, and this center project cannot be derailed by this issue.

There are still issues with safety that plague Quincy. In fact, its ranking for safety fall from # 2 for cities in Mass behind Newton to #4. We are now behind Newton, Cambridge and even Somerville (also known as "slummerville"). With the latest MCAS scores out and Quincy ranking as one of the lowest in the South Shore, what else can possible go wrong for Quincy? So, no, this issue is not resolved, and I am not closing this ticket! Move Father Bills out, increase police everywhere, and provide better and more resources for our schools!

I was in the library down in the cafe area a few months back. It was after-school hours and multiple grade school kids (boys) were present at the tables mostly looking at computers, talking etc. NO parents presnt. At another table was this creepy old dude. He had big binders full of some kind of trading cards and also had a laptop. The kids were VERY attracted to the man's cards and he was online chatting about his cards on some site. The kids talked to him like a friend and sat closely to him to see him cards. I was creeped out, called the policeman over. He said he was well aware of the guy, knew his name, he didn't have a record, and unless some kid got touched then he couldn't ask the guy to leave.

As a public space, the homeless can hang out there. Father Bill's kicks them out for the day after breakfast, which is why you see the guys sitting outside FB's on the curb during the day. The pursestealing, I believe, is the Oxycontin/Heroin/Meth heads who also deal in the Quincy Center area. I'd love to see both these groups addressed. Who is going to buy the fancy condos that are going to be built in the Center as part of the "mixed use retail/residential" multimillion dollar redevelopment?

If these drug dealers are around, then be a good citizen and report what you see and find. Quincy needs more doer, less whiners. If you dont like FB, then send a letter to the mayor demanding change. If just 20% of Quincy residents become more involved and demanding, the city will be more like Newton.
