If I'm not mistaken there is a cross just at the corner of Catherine St. and Ann St. too. I'm quite in favor of making A2 "walkable" but I'm also aware this is a street with regular traffic towards North of Ann Arbor. It's not practical to force drivers to stop every 100 ft.

State law prohibits parking within 20 feet of a crosswalk, so a mid-block crosswalk would require the removal of three parking spots on each side of 4th Avenue. I don't have an opinion, but I recommend the city consult with the business owners on the block.

Crosswalk construction will not be handled through A2 Fix It requests. Each suggestion must be run through a process and completely vetted before consideration. Ok, wrong forum, but there is strong support for a mid block crossing there. Other examples exist, if i'm not mistaken, on Maynard going from the arcade to the parking structure.

Emilia's comment has merit too. However, it isn't impractical to have stops for pedestrians. It's much more impractical to have to spend six months recovering from an auto accident. Quite often, pedestrians are hit near the stoplights at corners, because of 'right on red' and because drivers are impatient. The new law governing stopping for pedestrians is an improvement, but it will loose power if pedestrians walk out in traffic without looking. On the other hand, most drivers still believe they have absolute 'right of way' and will not SLOW for pedestrians or even other cars in their way. If the businesses on Fourth near the co-op weigh in on a crosswalk, the city may think it's profit motivated. Having comments on the issue available to the public and open to discussion will help focus the thinking on the subject. I think for that reason it's a good idea to re open this issue and leave it to be looked into.
