I'm in complete agreement. I'd suggest sending an email to the mayor (I did). For what it's worth, he got back to me right away. I'm not sure what the city needs to do, but it appears they are not able to do the job correctly with the resources and staff that they currently have. If this is the case, they need to hire more people and buy more equipment. If enough residents get on the city to do something, maybe it'll get fixed. At least in time for next winter.

I saw the same plow going down Woodland Road, plowing only a few inches off the side of the street. It was a complete waste of taxpayer resources- city employee time, gasoline, and vehicle wear and tear. Who are these people the city is hiring to operate the plows? Do they just pick random people off the street?

I personally have reported Woodland Road for not being plowed curb-to-curb several times this winter (and in past winters) and the curb-to-curb snow removal never gets done. Instead, the ticket gets closed out and marked "complete." If the city's snow removal plan is to wait until the summer heat melts the snow, then they should just say so, there is no need to falsify records by lying and saying that the work has been done. It's not just this particular street and set of tickets that the city has done this with, go through the SeeClickFix requests all over the city and you will see that the DPW has a pattern of falsely marking tickets complete, when they are indeed not complete.

I understand everyone frustrations and feel the same as I live in ward5. We do hear and see that surrounding Melrose/Medford have plowed more cleaner to the pavement and remove snow. The big priorityis to remove all the major street snow mountain on both side, so drivers can see each other while driving across every intersection. My sister just got into an accident where a driver did not see her at the curb b/c of snow mountain pile on both sides near Malden T area.

We all understand that we don't want to be the next driver got into accidents like that again where 911 needs to be called, fire/police/insurance/tow truck etc to come and waste the time and resources.

No Mayor, what I think would be helpful is if you would get together and work with the DPW to make sure the job gets done. That's all I and the other citizens want- plow the streets and enforce the sidewalk snow removal regulations. And perhaps you can speak to the folks at the DPW about falsely closing out tickets on SeeClickFix. We are tired of hearing excuses, we just want the job done.

And just in case it's not obvious, there is absolutely no way that I could even get down to city hall to meet with you. Given the condition of the sidewalks, I've practically been a prisoner in my home for the past 3 weeks because I have a 1 year old and can't navigate the sidewalks with a stroller and I refuse to push her in the streets because nobody would be able to see us behind these snow banks.

With all due respect, meetings will not get the streets cleared. I've opened tickets re Woodland Rd every year for the past 3 years. All side streets are awful. Take a little drive around and you'll clearly see this for yourself. The excuses being made by dpw are unacceptable. If roads were plowed properly, curb to curb, from the very 1st snowfall, we wouldn't have this issue. The city is not doing its job. If I don't do my job, there are repurcussions. How about the city? Shall I use my vacation time from work, or ignore my children, so we can discuss the situation? I think not. Please just get the plows out and do the job right the 1st time!

The DPW and the Mayor's office need to meet and then FIX the issue. Public safety is paramount here. I would hate to see a tragedy unfold in the midst of this incompetence.

And, by the way Mayor, you might want to also speak to the folks down in the police department or parking enforcement. It seems that residents are being ticketed for parking too far from the curb when the city has yet to plow the streets back to the curb. That is completely hypocritical and is the fault of the city for neglecting its duty.

And shame on whomever is censoring mad's comments! I saw them before they were removed. Last I checked this is a democracy where we have the freedom of speech. If you folks want to start a censorship program, you might want to consider relocating to some place where that kind of stuff flies.

Parking more than 12 inches from the curb creates a dangerous situation and the should be fined. Every other storm people shovel out the street spot. But these storms, people are just parking wherever without shoveling at all. Why? Because it is too much? Because its a "historic snow"? Well if the city cant use that excuse, then neither can the residents. Not defending the city, because being a Monday morning quarterback, I also feel a better job could have been done, but what is fair, is fair.

I agree with other residents Terri and SherriTJ. With all due respect, Mayor Christenson, the situation is not getting better. I'd encourage the head of the DPW, city counselors, and the mayor to drive or walk the streets and sidewalks of this city all around to see what a disaster it is. Head over to the YMCA or the post office to see what a nightmare it is for people dropping kids off or even attempting to park. I also agree that meetings won't fix this, unless it is your office meeting with DPW to make sure the job gets done. We are asking for public safety issues to be fixed. It's not like we're asking for a handout. You take our hard earned money in taxes and the least we can expect are clean streets and enforcement of violations regarding snow removal. I pray it doesn't take an tragic accident to wake the city governance up.

priscot, I don't agree. The city has more resources than private individuals. What about elderly drivers? Handicapped drivers? There are people who can drive cars in wheelchairs, should they be required to clean the city streets with a shovel? The parking ban was supposed to allow the city to plow to curb on one side. That is what it was designed for. The city never did this and people have no recourse but to park where they can, which in this case, is 4-5 feet from the curb against a solid ice/snow wall.

However, the snow banks on the sides of the roads are currently wider than a vehicle + 12 inches and they are certainly taller than a vehicle. If a single car is creating such a big hazard that it deserves ticketing, what then of entire streets lined on both sides with hazardous snow banks? And why should taxpayers be doing the city's job for it? The city needs to put on its grown up pants and deal with the problem. Stop making excuses. They never even cleaned up after the first storm weeks ago and have failed to clean up our street in years past, so this argument that we've received historic levels of snow is a moot point. They have a history of neglecting snow clean up.

I agree with Priscot people do need to shovel out spots on the street! The city has never cleared curb to curb on non emergency routes because people are always parked on one side or the other! I have never seen or heard from so many lazy/entitled people as during the past few weeks.
Yes the city has to figure out a snow removal plan but in the meantime if people want to park on street they need to shovel out spot. If they do not they should be ticketed.
I also agree with good neighbor that the city should start with removal at corners and intersections on major roads.
Given the amount of snow that has fallen I am thankful to live in a city that has been able to keep all major roads open and all minor roads passable. I have driven through many neighboring cities/towns and it is the same everywhere.

Compared to neighboring cities , Malden streets are in horrible condition. Who leads the DPW? Are they qualified for the position .. Malden needs to get with it as abutting towns are on the move, and this town is just taking pictures for the newspaper.. So don't close out future requests for see click services unless they are COMPLETED... Thank you..

It would be helpful to know what the terms of Bob Knox's employment are. Does he have a contract? Is he part of s collective bargaining unit? Who does he report to? Etc.

Traveling through this city by foot is difficult in the street and very hazardous..Where are the sidewalk plows the city has? Have not seen them at all...is anyone in charge of this?

Based on results, I'd say that nobody's in charge. Nothing's getting done. I just learned that the city isn't even clearing its own sidewalks.

Diaz, you got that right. Somebody's cousin or brother-in-law gets the job whether he can do it or not. Incompetence at the highest level. The streets and sidewalks need clearing...it isn't rocket science. Figure it out. It's not getting done because they need to milk the citizens for all they are worth. If they don't clean up fast, they can spend the next several weeks "fixing" the problems they've created. You're right, other communities are on the move, getting things done, and having no issues. Malden is not getting things done for a reason. I'm now convinced, after days of posting on this forum, they they are not necessarily interested in doing a good job. There's probably an ulterior motive for this. Corruption is no stranger to this city.

After traveling across the city this afternoon I can only say one thing. Bob Knox and the DPW crew you have done a great job clearing the streets. Things looked much better this week and Malden streets are now looking better then some of the nearby towns/cities.
I guess some of the folks throwing around comments have not been driving around the city or or anywhere in Eastern Massachusetts. They must not have heard we had record snowfall in a three week period!
