Description
The sidewalk here - one of the busiest in Raleigh - has been open/a severe hazard for over 1 month. Poor lighting at night - when the area is jammed - why is this allowed to continue????? And - why no crosswalk across Glenwood ave from the senior citizen home to 510 glenwood? "State owns the road" is an excuse that won't cut it when it comes to the safety of Raleigh residents...so please don't use it. Just fix it.

One of our inspectors met with the contractors on site today. They have repaired one area (NW corner) but still have to do some underground work in the other area (NE corner). We requested that they maintain all appropriate signage. We also requested that they install compacted ABC stone and maintain this area until they can reinstall the pavers. All of this work is directly related to the new construction at that location.
The Contractor stated that they had circled these areas last night with the yellow caution tape but it was removed during the evening.
We will continue to monitor the area and make contact with the contractors as needed.
I'll leave this one open for now for more information on the signal and crosswalk.

Thanks for the update. Saw the site Tue evening around 5pm. Pavers were 80% complete, and still working, which was nice to see.
The contractor is lying. I can't make it any more clear than that. The last time I saw any caution tape there was around New Years, and it was just lying on thr ground - no barrels or anything. This corner has been torn up for 30 days - before the current grading started on that house/job site. There have been no cones or anything blocking the dangerous conditions.
The real issue again is how we as a City let this happen (like the corner at The Hue apartments). Contractors are going to lie (shocker, I know). Utility work does need to happen - but if utility work is done one day, the street/sidewalk should be repaired (or temp, patch) the next. 30 days shouldn't go by. A street shouldn't be torn up unless the work is ready to occur, and be completed right then. If the parts aren't on hand, then wait until they are. I'd advocate sharp fines for contractors in situations such as this. This is not a sidewalk that no one uses.
As to the crosswalk over Glenwood Ave at that site - something needs to be there. I fundamentally disagree with the comment that an unmarked/unlit crosswalk is more dangerous than no crosswalk, but I'm sure the traffic engineer (Eric Lamb?) has those stats. However, I know of many cities throughout the country that have crosswalks with no lights. They use embedded lights in the roadway/signage/flags/etc...but they get it done. The State DOT (owner of Glenwood?) is a throwback to the 30's. We need to fix this crosswalk/add a crosswalk - and not really worry about the DOT. When it comes to the safety of Raleigh residents, they can lead, or get out of the way. Personally - they should get out of the way.
Thx for getting on this sidewalk problem so quickly.
