Unsecured trash can at RTA bus stop on Whiskey Bottom Rd near Harmony Lane in North Laurel.

The metal trash can has tipped over for a second time in two weeks and is lying along the curb. I have temporarily secured it with the chain tied to a signpost but it will break loose again. If you have the key to the padlock, the chain can be tied around the can to prevent a recurrence. THE CAN IS A DANGER TO VEHICLE TRAFFIC if left unsecured and can get blown into the travel lanes.

As of 4/21/24, the trash can has been removed from its chain and is once again, left unsecured on the sidewalk at this RTA bus stop. The next wind storm will likely send the metal can rolling into the street again. If someone from RTA who has a key to the lock on the chain can come to the site and tie up the can securely, the problem will be resolved.

It appears that Howard County's solution to the problem was to remove the trash can from the bus stop. I think it's a short-sighted remedy because the trash can was frequently used so it will be interesting to see if the lack of a can breeds more litter in that area. However, this issue can be closed since the hazard no longer exists.

Closed as of 5/9/2024 but will monitor for trash/littering issues
