I am writing to express concern about the rumble strips installed directly in front of 256-260 Duncan Ave, Jersey City, NJ 07306, and their significant impact on our properties and the surrounding homes.
While we understand the safety intentions behind the installation of rumble strips on our street, the reality of their impact has been distressing. The noise generated by vehicles, especially large trucks and buses, passing over these strips is considerably loud. More concerning, however, is the significant vibration caused by these interactions. The vibrations are intense enough to be felt within our homes, leading to a concern about potential long-term structural damage to our properties.
The constant noise and vibrations are not only a nuisance but have also created a stressful living environment for all affected homeowners. The large vehicles, in particular, generate vibrations that are strong enough to shake the foundations of our houses. This situation raises serious concerns about the integrity of our structures and the potential for property damage.
Additionally, we have growing concerns regarding the potential impact of these vibrations on underground utilities, specifically the sewer lines servicing our homes and along Duncan Ave. The persistent vibrations caused by heavy vehicles traversing the rumble strips may be causing unseen damage to these critical infrastructures. Given the age and condition of the city’s sewer system in our area, the added stress from these vibrations could accelerate wear and tear, leading to potential failures or costly repairs in the future.
Given these circumstances, we respectfully request that the city conduct an evaluation of the impact of the rumble strips on residential properties in our area and consider alternative traffic calming measures that could maintain road safety without compromising the quality of life and property stability of local residents. We also urge the city to conduct a thorough assessment of the sewer lines in the vicinity of the rumble strips to ensure their integrity has not been compromised.
We are open to discussing potential solutions and would greatly appreciate the city’s effort in finding a remedy to reduce the impact of these rumble strips on our homes and the local infrastructure. Could the city consider alternative traffic calming measures that might be less disruptive?
Thank you for your attention to this matter. We look forward to your prompt response and are hopeful for a constructive dialogue to address this issue.

I am writing to express my concerns regarding the recent implementation of rumble strips in front of our property.
For context, approximately two years ago, we undertook the task of repointing our front brick foundation. Given the age of the structure, a sand mix mortar was utilized to ensure the preservation of our historic bricks. Unfortunately, since the installation of the rumble strips, we have noticed a significant degradation in the pointing work. This deterioration has led to exposed bricks and gaps in the mortar, raising concerns about the long-term structural integrity of our property. This damage has become particularly apparent within the last six months, coinciding with the introduction of the rumble strips.
Additionally, I would like to bring to your attention a previous incident involving our sewer line. Four years ago, our sewer line was crushed during construction work performed by PSEG. The subsequent repair required significant time and resources. Given the delicate nature of our infrastructure, I am deeply concerned about the potential impact of constant vibrations from passing vehicles, especially large semi-trucks, on our recently repaired sewer line.
It is evident that the current state of Jersey City's infrastructure is fragile, and the implementation of such aggressive traffic calming measures only exacerbates this issue. As a resident, I am fully supportive of exploring alternative, less intrusive methods of traffic management that prioritize both safety and the preservation of our neighborhood's historic structures.
I kindly request that these concerns be taken into consideration, and I am available to discuss this matter further at your convenience. Thank you for your attention to this important issue

I am writing to follow up on our previous correspondence regarding the ongoing issues caused by vibrations in our neighborhood. Enclosed are images from two homes on Duncan Street which illustrate the extent of the visible impact.
The first image captures the interior of a basement, showing visible damage. The second image is from my neighbor’s property. It is important to note that the mortar in this area had been replaced within the last two years; however, due to the continuous vibrations from the rumble strips, it has already begun to crumble again. This clearly demonstrates the severity of the impact the vibrations are having on our structures. Additionally, it is important to emphasize that this represents only the visible damage; the actual extent may be more severe.
If necessary, I am also prepared to record and upload a video showing the impact of commercial vehicles, which further contribute to the problem.
Thank you for addressing this urgent matter promptly.
