I drive through this intersection 2-4x a day and agree it's an odd one and always has been. When stopped on Yale facing Yale Bowl it can be very hard to see the cars approaching on Chapel at times. I attended Edgewood School back 45 years ago and the was no light at the Yale and Edgewood intersection and bad accidents happened there all the time. The kids in school started a campaign to get a light there and after the media became involved it was installed. It took some bad accidents to get someones attention so don't expect much to happen. I would still like to see something done on Central as the traffic there is like a race track at times. A speed hump between Edgewood and West Elm would be nice to slow it down.

A probable "urban legend" in the neighborhood is the city does not want to do anything that will slow residents of Woodbridge and Bethany from getting home swiftly and, parenthetically, escaping the "dangers" of the city.

On 12/28, a car driving north on Yale blew threw the blinking red light at this intersection and nearly blindsided my car. I was thankfully able to stop in time. This entire neighborhood is in dire need of traffic calming, and I'm not exaggerating when I use the word dire...

Not 5 minutes ago a pickup truck illegally passed two cars then sped through the Yale Ave intersection. Had to be doing 70mph. I live on the block between Yale Ave and Central Ave. The steady flow of speeding commuters is beyond ridiculous. Just a matter of time....

We need a traffic circle, similar to the one at W Park and Elm, at this intersection. This may slow things down. I'd like to think the Mayor's Office and our Alderman would be responsive to this decades long problem site. I'm not optimistic.

Agree for traffic calming measures throughout Westville (along with increased bike lanes and working traffic lights). Infrastructure is hands down the best solution, but it faces challenges of traffic studies, financing and public debate. A more immediate solution might be to lobby for a new traffic dedicated police officer to be stationed in Westville to aggressively enforce the rules that already exist. No studies needed, no public debate, and potentially revenue neutral. Plus adds another safety officer to the area if needed. If enough speeders' daily drives bring them by someone getting a ticket, they may start to obey the rules or choose other routes meant for commuting (i.e. non residential).

That vast, ungainly and now dangerous intersection was created, I think, to serve as a turnaround for the street cars that used to come up Chapel to the Yale Bowl on game days. The best solution would be to get street car service again, which would tie together downtown and Westville and force cars to slow down (like the Green Line on Comm Ave in Boston/Brookline). Given that's not in the cards in our lifetimes, this would be a natural spot for a traffic circle, slowing down the speeders up and down Chapel and easing entry into the intersection from Yale. Would look a whole lot nicer, too.

As noted, I have spoken with four alderpersons. Traffic is dangerous. There is a busy daycare center near the intersection. Lots of cars speeding and lots of parents dropping off children - not a good mix. I saw a car speed through the intersection, swerve in front of the daycare center, and flip on its roof. The driver was help upside down in her seat by the seat belt. She was pregnant. If this intersection were near Alden St it would have been fixed a long time ago - witness the two center street planters installed to slow traffic. The intersection must need wealthy residents nearby to get action.

absolutely agree with the traffic circle or a permanent light. I drive through this intersection every day. The planters on Chapel have already reduced average speed by 5-10mph in that section to 20-30mph but people are still zooming through the central-yale-bridge-grasso section at 35-45 mph. I hate to even walk across this intersection and the sightlines are dangerous.

If any of you are serious about implementing traffic slowing at this Yale/Chapel intersection you need to work through the process that the city has established to clarify and request intervention. This blog might get a pot hole filled or garbage picked up but you will never get any traction to fix this traffic problem via this blog. In order to achieve some action you must develop a constituency of mutually concerned neighbors that are willing to meet with the Alderman and proceed from there. You can absolutely accomplish this.
