If three bulk pickups per year aren't enough for you, then take ownership of your own trash, and call a hauler to come and get it, for example 1-800--GOT-JUNK, rather than expect everyone else to cover the cost of your trash habit. Trash pickup costs the city a lot more money, and fellow taxpayers shouldn't share in the cost of picking up the excess trash produced by others. Also, the city was just as trashy looking when we were on the absurd schedule of monthly trash pickup, the perceived necessity for which largely due to the high turnover rate in rentals in multifamily homes. We need to transition to a "pay as you throw" policy, in which the more trash you make, the more you pay. And we need to start enforcing laws that (1) require recycling, and (2) require that trash haulers refuse to pickup trash that has recyclables in it.

It's not a trash "habit" so thank you for your comment. Only three dates throughout the entire year can make it difficult for folks who travel for work frequently or have prior commitments. This is the first bulk trash item I've needed to dispose of and I'm finding it difficult to find an affordable way to dispose of it. Many cities in Connecticut have a transfer station where residents can drop off it items. It might be beneficial to see if West Haven can partner with another larger city that has access to a transfer station, since our city does not.

Sorry, didn't mean to lump you in with the large number of people in West Haven who do have the habit. Or perhaps it's landlords bringing in bulk trash from rental properties in other towns. In any case, both of your suggestions are worth considering. Another possibility is to do what some cities do, and allow residents to schedule a bulk trash pickup, and limit it to three such scheduled pickups per year; those who require mroe pickups can pay for them through private haulers. Other cities charge a subsidized rate of $50 or $100 or something like that.
The problem with curbside pickup of "bulk trash" in West Haven is that, whereas it's supposed to be for "large bulky items," West Haven's problem with enforcement results in it being abused, and instead of large bulky items, the curb turns into a dumping spot for enormous piles of loose uncontained trash of all kinds, much of it blowing away or ending up in storm drains and then out in the Sound. Turns our streets into eyesores.

I called City hall to suggest a collaboration between cities. West Haven is surrounded by towns with transfer stations. Have an agreement with other towns so we can pay to use their stations. Our fence fell in the last storm and we have to wait until after winter to dispose of it. Terrible

We do need a transfer station like Hamden. Since there r a lot of rentals furniture is often dumped around town. I notified Public Works a few weeks ago about chair dumped near RR bridge on Washington Ave and it is still there.
