This is the reason our area doesn't get useful resources. Money is being spent on illegal dumping. The City spends millions each year cleaning up illegal dumping. It's not a free service. We are losing valuable resources because of selfishness. Need to change the rules for bulky pickup through Waste Management. Being fined $150 or more if you go over length & height limits encourages illegal dumping.
You may be on to something. Since the city is paying for the illegal dumping anyway, they might as well just let people dump more legally through the bulky pickup.
Some more innovative ideas like that should be worth looking at. If the city is spending 6 million dollars per year to clean up illegal dumping, they should be looking for ways to re-organize that spending to more effectively address the issue. SeeClickFix is a great tool, but it doesn't address the underlying issue. And obviously more items are being reported than cityworks can actually clean up on a timely basis.
The City government should get proactive to stop illegal dumping and stop being reactive. Just picking up the dumped trash isn't working. Invest in staff and camera's now. Might be large expenditure up front but will pay for itself in the long run. Right now the City is spending a ridiculous amount of $$$ picking up trash. Need to catch illegal dumpers and make an example, i.e. community clean up, etc. Just picking up the trash isn't working. If a person schedules a bulky pickup you have to stand guard all night to stop people from adding to it so you don't get charged by Waste Management for going beyond the set measurements.
Get involved in the community meetings. Illegal dumping is a hot topic. If you live near Brookfield, Sobrante Park or Columbia Gardens, the next Neighborhood Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) meeting is Wednesday, September 13th at Madison Park Academy, 400 Capistrano Drive, Oakland 94603 from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. If you live in the South Stonehurst area the next meeting of the Resident & Merchant Neighborhood Watch is August 17th, 6 p.m. at the East Oakland Boxing Association.
