The City has a backlog of sidewalk service requests. The majority of City work on sidewalk repair, maintenance and new construction is supported by grant monies. These monies have been awarded mainly to renovation and construct new sidewalks under the “Safe Route to School” grant program for elementary school routes. High schools and middle schools, we find, are less likely to be awarded these grants.
To address the need for construction of new sidewalks, the City Council adopted a Transportation Master Plan (http://www.shorelinewa.gov/government/departments/public-works/transportation-services/sidewalks-prioritization-plan) on December 12, 2011 which prioritized and ranked sidewalk projects throughout the City based upon a series of criteria. However, given limited resources as a result of the current economy, the City has been focused on constructing sidewalks that meet very specific Federal and State programs.
