I agree with Karl. And equally annoying to me is the people who have the actual handicapped stickers and/or plates on their vehicles, but clearly are not handicapped themselves, the tag/plate obviously being for a friend or family member. Its one thing if you have them with you, of course. But Im talking about non handicapped people, out and about by themselves, who just take advantage of their tags to get a good parking spot. I wish there was a way to crack down on that as well, but I doubt it...

The handicap marker belongs to the handicapped person, not the vehicle. No invalid, no PARK. I carry my card with me, and use it when I have to. I don't leave it hanging on the mirror for anyone driving the car to use it.
Maybe the sign should read "Handicap parking only - all other vehicles will be towed". Then the landowner could enforce it.

Thank you all for you comments, I want to if anyone knows why are there even handicapped parking signs for then anyway? Most places are privately owned. I think it is more of a moral issue here and I really feel bad for those that just are not considerate of anyone else but himself or herself. These people need to know that God in my opinion does reward good behavior and I can tell you about the time God showed me a perfect smiley face with clouds. That is the truth, and I feel that God was telling me he was there for me. When I seen the clouds they broke up into nothing. I challenge all of you to look for your special sign from God, by being considerate of others, and when you least expect it, look for it. I know I am preaching to the choir here.

in accordance with the law, no one can be asked to prove if they are handicapped. Similarly, its not our position as business owners/employees to enforce parking issues. With that said, I have this comment: I absolutely HATE it when someone has a plackard, DROPS the handicap person off at the door, and then proceeds to the handicapped spot. Not illegal, but certainly not in good taste. Choose your battles is my motto...

if an individual does not know what a handicapped spot is by now, i feel sorry for them. The only time I have a problem with handicapped spots is when you are at a store, and there are so many of them, that it seems like there's more of them than regular spaces.

Hopefully all people, including those that illegally park in handicapped spots will stop going to BP. Why would anybody want to support a company that destroys this planet and doesn't give a damn?

BP doesn't own ANY gas stations! Boycotting? Get the facts. 1-BP stations are local businesses employing local people. 2-EPA limits the # of fuel distribution centers so there's only 1 or 2 places your fuel is coming from. Cleveland gets BP or Marathon fuel..period! Even if the sign says speedway. 3-...I have never spilled one ounce of oil so if you do plan to go to BP please give me a break, thank you in advanced. You are correct that BP does not own any gas stations, but they do supply the gas to the stations and therefore make a profit on it. So when you buy gas from BP, you're supporting a British (not American) company with one of the worst environmental records in history.

And yes, when you buy gas from Speedway, it's from Marathon. An American company, which also doesn't have a great environmental record, but still far better than BP.

This issue should be closed because someone brought up a very concerning issue that is effecting our city and others have now turned this into a debate about oil companies. Please take a look at yourselves people why must everything be an argument?

As a handicapped person, I agree with most of you. I do have a small bone to pick.... I have internal titanium rodding in both of my legs which causes severe arthritis. I have had the police called on me, been questioned, and hassled in parking lots. Just because one can not see my handicap, (I don't walk funny) Who gives people the right to judge me?? I don't park in a handicap spot unless I need it that day, but yet people still can't resist the urge to open their mouths. Don't judge a book by its cover.

I completely agree with annoyed. I know plenty of handicapped people that truly are handicapped but you wouldn't be able to tell unless you spent some time with them. I am ok, for the most part, with anyone who has a valid sticker/license plate on their car to park in those designated spots. Yes, some people will take advantage of their friends/families cars or stickers and use them for their own personal advantage but I feel for the most part that doesn't happen. I think you see more people park in handicap spots without a sticker than people who use others' stickers just to get better parking.

I wanted to mention that too, about people who are entitled to a handicapped sticker that "don't look" handicapped. Not everyone who uses these is in a wheelchair or on crutches. People who have heart conditions may not "look handicapped" but they need their plates/stickers as much as the folks in the wheelchairs.

I can't imagine who would think it's socially acceptable to take a privilege you're not entitled to. I can imagine people doing, but not that it's okay or even applauded.

I park in the handicap spots when most of them are empty. After all isn't everyone entitled to a mulligan once in a while?

It's never ok to park in a handicapped spot, unless you have a sticker or hang tag. It is however, perfectly legal to park in the stork parking spots for pregnant women. I park in the one at Walmart all the time. If a preggo can walk around in Walmart, then they can walk in the parking lot to get into the store.

I complained several years ago of this abuse at my employee garage after someone on crutches almost fell trying to get out of the car in a regular parking spot. I would estimate that at least half or more of the persons with handicapped tags in our garage are not legit. How do I know? Well why would you need a handicapped tag if you can walk 2-3 blocks to work from the garage, especially in HIGH heels. I have seen some take DOWN their tag as they are leaving the garage. If you have a handicapped child or parent I really don't see how you can justify using the tag unless you are bringing them to work with you! I was told if they required proof or questioned the legitimacy of the tag, lawyers would have a field day.

How do they handle parking at all handicap event?

Jr. I do believe that when they have an event where most everyone is handicapped they assign people to help, like valet parking and people that help escort them. I know a couple of people who work for Deepwood and that is what they do. They also use school buses as well with escorts. Jim Bob I think that pregnant women have complications that make it harder for them to get around in most parking lot, such as pot holes and dealing with cars and such. Once they are in the store the obstacles diminish dramatically, see? I hope that this helps you both understand better on why these spaces are needed. My mother has COPD and she does not enjoy going to the store, it is a chore for her, my Dad has bad knees and cannot walk far; He uses the shopping cart to hang on to something to help him get around, he mostly stays home though.

Thank you all for your excellent comments. It seems we live in a world of "you owe me's", I have lupus and not once, with walker, wheel chair, or kidney bag, have I used a handicapped spot. Because there are people with no legs, 1 lung, or worse who could use it. Get a license plate # call it in to the local PD, if it is a repeat offender the PD usually will not have a problem sending a warning to the offender. We should care more about others, giving up a seat or letting someone in the grocery line with one item go in front of you. Moral anger can be used for change or it can destroy you and turn you bitter. Boycotting everyone is not the answer, but holding an individual offender accountable for their behavior is.
