The stop sign at the intersection of Vanderlyn Drive and Hensley Drive has a crosswalk for pedestrians. Yesterday afternoon at 2:15 pm I watched, as I approached the intersection on foot, an elementary school child standing in the crosswalk being ignored by motorists. The motorists included school buses and cars. I am NOT exaggerating when I say that ALL of these vehicles rolled through the stop sign without stopping and either without seeing the child in the crosswalk or ignoring her. This intersection needs flashing lights or police presence every day when children are walking home from school. I plan to video tape the intersection and I will upload the video here when I have it.

Great. I look forward to seeing immediate, on-going, permanent results for this issue. It's not the first pedestrian/vehicle conflict in this crosswalk.

This is also a problem for my three children who walk to Vanderlyn and Dunwoody High every day. I hope that this issue will be addressed as soon as possible, so that we don’t have to worry about our children’s safety.

I was upset to see cars rolling through this stop sign as my daughter was waving at them and trying to cross the street. I was ticked off when I saw school buses do the same thing. They just ignored the little girl IN the crosswalk.

Vanderlyn used to have a crossing guard at this location is that not the case anymore? The Dunwoody Police will be notified about the concern of drivers not yielding to pedestrians in the crosswalk.

There has not been a crossing guard at this intersection in the afternoon (during dismissal of the elementary school) this entire year. The crossing guard is ONLY present in the morning. And I can tell you, when he is not there in the morning, pedestrians disappear to the drivers in the intersection. I have witnessed several instances of a pedestrian in the crosswalk very nearly missed being hit by a vehicle. If you need other witnesses or names I can supply them.

So, in short, it doesn't matter if an official person is there most of the time - the very day the official is not present is the very day motorists ignore the crosswalk. The pedestrians (school children!) are there every day.

Update: today my husband and I were honked at by a bus driver as we were crossing (in the crosswalk) at this intersection.

Holly, I think you need to call the school to address this issue. Lately, I haven't seen the DES crossing guard on Womack in the afternoons either. I wonder if DCSD eliminated them for some crazy reason ($$$)?

We have reached out to the Vanderlyn principal and notified the police. School crossing guards are provided by the DeKalb County Board of Education. Please contact the school system regarding concerns about crossing guard staffing.

A volunteer has approached the city about placing crossing flags at this intersection to help call attention to pedestrians. The flags will likely be in place by the beginning of school next year.
