The City is aware that this relatively old fountain, when operating, has a design defect that periodically causes debris to clog the pipes, causing water to overflow. There is no way to “fix” this design flaw. The only way to prevent this is to disable the flow of water. The City has made a policy decision that it prefers this fountain to operate, notwithstanding that these overflows will occur. The City accepts the occasional overflows as a cost of maintaining the working fountain condition. Tom Ambrosino, City Manager

Why can't there be a shut off that the police can access who are across the street? Can you run the fountain shorter hours so when clogged its not pouring 18 hours per day down the drain? The tax payers are paying for the overflow of water down the drain. Why aren't their signs for people to stop putting things in the fountain? Parents allow kids to play in the fountain and block the drain constantly. Why aren't they monitored as well as the drinking is being monitored? Why can't an overflow drain be installed in the fountain around the edge? There seems to be access.

I agree with the position to keep the fountain running with the understanding that sometimes it will overflow. It adds so much to the area so I have no problem putting up with some leaking here and there. I am guessing this is not a cheap fix and I am not sure that as a taxpayer I want my dollars going to that instead of fixing a sidewalk/paving a street/getting more Police patrols. Thanks Tom for putting up a fight for the water fountain!
