Wow should this turf have been bagged on site before being moved. Seems like this company has no protocol for safe removal so that 1000s of pieces of rubber and plastic don’t wash into sewer drains. Come on people.

Clearly a fail by the company installing new turf at Deering. Where’s the quality control? Where are the people overseeing this project to ensure we don’t damage the environment with this waste- and now where are they to clean this up?

Unfortunately, there was a breakdown in communication between the contractor and myself, acting as the project manager for the City. The trucks to take the old field to recycling were not available on Friday as I had thought. The contractor who is trying to keep a terribly tight schedule put on them by me, decided to stack the 10,000lbs rolls across the street in the designated work zone. As the rolls went across the street, they did leak some sand and rubber pellets. Once I was notified of this Saturday, I immediately came in and cleaned up the area and temporarily blocked the storm drains with hay bales from my farm in case of rain. We are currently placing bags in the drains and using socks to filter the drains. The rolls of old material should be gone by Tuesday or Wednesday morning and I will continue to monitor any other construction debris for the length of the project.

Thank you Ethan for taking action. It was a bummer to see the rain from Friday night had already washed a decent portion of the tire pellets down those drains but at least further damage was prevented. I appreciate the response! Katie

This is not resolved yet. I’ll be emailing the city. What a mess and a week later.

This is an active construction area. All the old fileld rolls should be removed by tomorrow and then any left over bebris shall be cleaned up.
