Description
Drivers speed down the hill from Prospect St. past Whitney, and drive very fast down Canner. Since Canner St. is effectively a through-street connecting different parts of town, drivers are in a hurry to get where they're going without regard to the fact that these are residential areas with a lot of pedestrian and bike traffic, kids and pets.

I agree Derek that traffic enforcement is important and key to helping reduce speeding and dangerous driving. The Complete Streets coalition has been pushing the city to enforce the traffic laws more consistently and the city has responded to our requests to a certain degree. That said, it's not enough.
In addition to traffic enforcement, there are improvements - both inexpensive and expensive ones that can seriously alter the way cars travel through an area - for example the in-street pedestrian crosswalk signs recently introduced to Orange Street which cheaply but effectively slow traffic down and push cars to stop for crossing pedestrians.
Speeding is a problem on Cold Spring, Canner, Willow, English Drive and other streets in the neighborhood. We need to work together to figure out specific solutions to each of these problems. I'm putting together a list of vocal and concerned citizens so we can talk with a more unified voice. Stay tuned.

I'm hosting a meeting tonight (Tuesday, June 9) to discuss traffic and crime issues in Northern East Rock. The meeting will be at Wilbur Cross High School at 7pm. Please come and help us design an overall plan for addressing these issues in East Rock. And email me at justinelicker@gmail.com if you can't make it but want to be involved.

A group of dedicated Canner Street residents recently collected signatures to encourage the City to address the speeding problems on Everit Street. Last week I met with City officials to discuss the problem and they were very receptive.
Ultimately the problem should be addressed by increased enforcement and perhaps additional traffic calming infrastructure on the street. I'll let you know as things progress.

Hi All,
After some hard work on the part of some active Canner Street residents and responsiveness of the Dept. of Transportation, Traffic and Parking, we're making some ground on addressing the issue of speeding on Canner Street between Whitney Avenue and Orange Street. Representatives from the City will be meeting with Canner St. residents on Monday, October 4 at 4pm in front of the little Hooker School to discuss speed humps. If you are at all concerned about speeding on Canner please show up.
