City Assessor Bill O'Brien sent me a letter yesterday, saying that my car's in New Haven a lot, and I may or may not be guilty of tax fraud. I live on Orange St. I paid City taxes on my car to get a residents' permit in January 2009. The City Assessor's receptionist said, "We didn't check our list of folks who've paid taxes before we sent out that letter. We simply sent them out to every vehicle with out-of-state plates that is on record. You're going to have to send us a copy of your tax payment receipt and permit receipt, or you'll be fined." New Haven, it's 2009! You can't penalize your citizens because you can't keep your records straight!

It's a disgrace--a friend of mine from NYC is being menaced with the same thing, & the tax assessor's office refuses to help, saying he needs to talk to the 3rd party company.
Hello, welcome to the real world, you do not harass visitors to your city via 3rd party companies. You do your job & directly contact people.
He's a public school teacher in NYC. I'd love to see how he lives here & commutes by car to NYC and back every day. His gf goes to Yale & he visits her maybe 2 times a month. I hardly think that qualifies him for paying taxes here. Yet, some stupid automated detection caught him, and now he's being hassled. NYC doesn't charge car tax, so he can't even use that to prove he's got the car elsewhere.
It's a total scam. Yes there are people who don't pay their taxes, but no need to harass those who do, and those who don't even live here. I can guarantee, when his gf is done at Yale, they aren't sticking around. That's just one of many reasons.
