St James is scheduled to be reconstructed this year.

Ken, I hope along with the reconstruction of St. James the town has a plan to control the speed on that street? Historically St. James has been a drag strip with vehicles speeding up to & over twice the posted speed. Traffic calming or dead ending the street needs to be done to ensure the resident a safe & peaceful existence!

Ken, with all due respect passing my concerns to the police dept. won't solve the problem. The dedicated men & women of the Enfield police dept have been there numerous times to control the speed (and running stop signs) and once they leave the problem comes back. So unless the town is going to place an officer there 24/7 the problem is going to continue! My wife & I were on the committee years ago for the re-alignment of St. James & Elm St and at that time we tried to "fix" the speed issue only to be told that traffic calming couldn't be done for various (un-sustained) reasons. If the town really cares about the residents and are willing to listen I would be willing to offer my suggestions.

They are going to be narrowing the road, hopefully this will help slow traffic down. I can understand your frustration being a life long resident and working in streets with cars speeding by. This issue is all over town, people don't respect the posted speed limit signs.

If "narrowing" the street means adding calming islands then that might work. Another method that is used in other towns would be wide speed bumps. I can tell you that these wide speed bumps would keep speed down to 20-25 MPH (which is appropriate for residential streets). Back when we were on the committee we suggested speed bump but some group in town (can't remember who) "claimed it would damage their vehicle" which I can't understand. Another thing to consider, depending on what you use to slow the speeds it might create an issue on Carol St. by diverting traffic there.
