This is a three-way intersection with only yield signs. Cars frequently speed around this corner. No one knows who has the right of way and there have been many close-call accidents. A three-way stop sign would help very much.
Herbert St. and Blackburn corner has an unnecessarily confusing intersection. There are two yield signs on Herbert St. (which by observation, almost nobody abides by) and nothing on Blackburn. To make this situation even worse is that this is a commonly travelled route for school aged kids to get to and from school. Motorists use this street as a speedy connection to downtown Beacon from Route 52. I have watched several times as children on bicycles were trapped on the west side of Blackburn trying to get to the other side of the street as cars were whipping by taking the turn at full speed. I have also watched cars disregard the yield signs and drive straight through the intersection when a car travelling southbound on Blackburn (no yield sign) maneuvered the turn and there was nearly an accident. This has happened several times. The location of the street gives access to downtown Beacon from Rt. 52, making it a highly travelled route. The problem is that it is also a street where mothers walk children in strollers and families ride bikes to the park on Fishkill Ave (this all takes place on the road since there are no sidewalks.) Since this is a community and not a highway, Could it possibly hurt to put stop signs on all three corners? We don’t need to wait for an accident to happen to change this.
