Well, it's an experiment. I think the seefixclick people originally had in mind a system for reporting things like potholes to instigate repairs and give bikers and drivers a heads-up. But it is open to many uses; we'll see how it develops. A number of city government divisions in different places and the Miami herald are using it. With sufficient use and quality use, it can give aldermen, police, public works people, community organizers (etc) a free, instant, community-collaborative heads-up display of things they may want to address or keep an eye on.
My thinking is that this is the best way I know right now to concentrate and spread local awareness of crime/property/street problems and supplement the city enotify system that is used all over the city, plus the way email each other, their neighborhood groups, etc.
The "tickets" stay open for a time that's set when you create a report. I think the default is 14 days. Then I guess they close themselves--not sure. People can update and/or close tickets for whatever reason...good reasons might be the problem is being addressed somehow. Crime incidents typically are closed for a reason by police, but followup and outcome can take a while, and then the police tend not to share/do not have an easy way to share outcomes outside of you asking them, going to meetings, or requesting records. So this could be a great opportunity for community liaison officers and people who communicate with them a lot to post followup comments on outcomes, at least on the "bigger-ticket" crimes.
