This obviously needs to be addressed on an ongoing basis. People shouldn't have to report this on SeeClickFix weekly. This just results in unnecessary administrative work and time would be better spent addressing the problem on a regular basis. The City should have a list of hotspots like this that need ongoing care. What an absolute dream it would be to never have to report about this area again. But if it is not addressed we'll continue to be squeaky wheels.

Yes, agreed! Between that any the almost constant urine smell, walking back and forth to the BART station is a trial.

Prior to 2009, there were few shootings in the JLS area. Since that time, there have been multiple shootings and more deaths than you can count on one hand. The filth and homeless encampments under the freeway send a strong message to would-be criminals that the neighborhood is not being patrolled. Mayor Quan should take a page out of Mayor Bloomberg's playbook: When you clean up the filth, and enforce a zero-tolerance policy, crime goes down.

I believe it is time to start filing maintenance requests to Caltrans for the underpass encampments. On June 4 I submitted a Broadway underpass maintenance request to Caltrans at http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/maint/msrsubmit/ (see http://seeclickfix.com/issues/555605 for this and other contact information) but it was kicked back as an Oakland issue. I'll submit for the encampments specifically and post response.

Jeff--if the homeless encampment is between the fence and the street, then it is City of Oakland.

I completely agree. When neighborhoods look neglected it lowers property values, makes residents feel depressed and hopeless and gives criminals the impression they can do whatever they want.

Please clean this area on a regular/weekly basis. It is an eyesore and discourages visitors from walking from downtown to Jack London Square. I run through this area as I walk to Bart because it is so filthy.

The City and the Jack London District Association are holding a Town Hall Meeting on this subject next week. As the eyes/ears and voices of our community See Click Fix users input could be very valuable.
