Caterpillar infestation all along Jersey Avenue, York Street, Varick Street. Pale green caterpillars eating leaves and encasing tree branches in thick webbing. The caterpillars are also eating the plants in the gardens along those streets and killing them.

Mixing dish detergent and water and using it as a spray will not hurt plants but may kill some of the worms. This is not as effective as using a spray that is made for this purpose. Web worm spray can be purchased at Amazon, Home Depot, Lowe’s or any garden store. Summit Caterpillar Spray is one brand that he is aware of. Another that is effective is Neem Oil. Any spray that has the active ingredient BACILLUS THURINGIENSIS is harmless and effective.
The worms will eat the leaves on the trees and plants but will NOT do any permanent damage to plants. They are a natural result of the very wet spring weather that we had.
