There are about 100-150 cars that go through the street every hour during the day. Many people take it as a cut through street to avoid Newington Rd. and New Britain Ave. This is a residential street with many families with children and pets. Has anyone report this to the West Hartford Town Engineer to evaluate the situation? Maybe change the street to be a one-way street and add speed humps/traffic circles/multiway stop signs would help the problem?

As a resident on Elmfield St, I agree fully with the complaints. I have NOT seen one officer on this street stopping speeders. You can't get out of your driveway without nearly getting hit nor can you even back into it without a fight with an irate motorist who is in a hurry. I suggest that speed bumps be installed, more stop signs be placed. Strict enforcement by Police be put in place. We have kids, pets, our own personal safety at stake.

Elmfield St. residents, I have emailed the town engineers Duane Martin and Chuck Guarino for their help. Chuck did not respond to my e-mail and now I am trying Duane. I think power is in the number, if more people write to the city about this problem then more likely something gets done.

I saw that a traffic counter has been installed on the street for a survey. The complaint is certainly valid but not sure engineering, short of blocking thru traffic is necessary. It would appear that the violators are actually locals or regulars and some targeted enforcement action upon those whose use the street daily might change behavior. The application of additional and unwarranted stop signs for the sake of reducing speed only serves to create a general disregard for all stop signs. Preserving the neighborhood environment is essential for the safety of all users and residents. The conditions are certainly exacerbated when New Britain Avenue becomes congested as a result of an I-84 accident / construction. I vote for targeted enforcement during commuting hours and an overall reduction in the speed limit for the entire neighborhood to 25 MPH.

You are right about the traffic counter, it is there. I disagree somewhat with you regarding through traffic. While I agree that residential travel is high, so is through traffic. I sit in my driveway while a string of cars drive down the hill and fly by. I don't think stop signs are the answer either. Many Hartford Streets have had speed bumps installed. While I'm not so sure that is our answer, it may slow folks down. I agree with police enforcement too. The speed limit I believe is 30 mph, I know for a fact, motorists are going faster than that. The thing that really frightens me is that we have a lot of families with children on this street. Speed is excessive. If they can't respect 30 mph, 25 mph will be most certainly ignored. Well, a lot of time has passed by since the last post regarding speeding cars and high traffic volume on Elmfield St. NOTHING has been done about it at all~! We still have to fight the high speeding irate motorists who don't want to give residents on this street a break. I've not seen any police activity what so ever~! More families with children have moved into homes on this street since the last post. Our calls for enforcement have been totally ignored~!
