Tannahill has become a very very busy street. The neighborhood continues to grow with younger families. Several neighbors in this area have witnessed young kids on bikes zooming up and down the road. As cars come off of Carl T Jones they seem to speed through the neighborhood. We would like to suggest more than one speed bump in this area. It will not only slow down the speeders but will also protect the little ones on bikes. Also note lots of kids going to jones valley pool or the Southwood youth center. Please consider.

Unfortunately, at this time, we have temporarily suspended our traffic calming data collection for the program as well as other traffic studies due to the change in traffic patterns and reduction in traffic volumes as a result of COVID-19 and the shelter at home/safer at home order. We will resume the data collection once restrictions are lifted and traffic patterns return to normal fully. Additionally, funding for the Program during the current fiscal year has been depleted on projects that were approved earlier in this fiscal year as well as carryovers from FY19. We would encourage you to apply after October 2020 so that we can study the street you are referring to.
Typically, per City Administration process, the Huntsville Fire Department ( Fire Chief) would be requested to determine if the street is a primary response route. These routes are used by the fire department and other emergency responders to get to other roads within the neighborhood. Primary response routes are designated as the main route into a subdivision in the event of a structure fire, medical emergency, or natural disaster. Speed cushions and other traffic calming devices hinder their response times. We have been asked by the Fire Chief to consult with the department prior to proceeding with the process. Were the Fire Chief to designate a street as a non-primary response route, staff will proceed with studying the street. The criteria for speed cushions installed within the City of Huntsville is based on 500 cars/day and an 85th percentile speed of 35 mph or more. Both criteria have to be met, not just one.
