Description

The new centerline on Grove St. is a problem. Going northbound, it is impossible to drive to the right of the new yellow lines, as there isn't enough room to get by the parked cars on the east side (parking is not allowed on the west side). The line was painted in the middle, leaving plenty of room going southbound, but not nearly enough room going north. It's psychological: as drivers, we are trained not to cross a double yellow center line, so it now feels like being encouraged, channeled you might say, to pass dangerously close to the parked cars. We must choose either to squeeze past them—risking clipping them—or cross the center line. Formerly, there was no center line, and traffic going both ways gave way to whoever needed the space. Given the limitations of the street, no center line was the best design.

Just this morning, 9/10/20, there was a crash on the street. I don't know if it was due to the new lines, but I know in my own experience as a driver that it's now more difficult to navigate this street with the contraint of this (misplaced) center line. And, when traffic backs up between 4:30 and 5:15pm weekdays, all cars will be straddling the yellow line. It makes no sense. Please paint over the yellow center line in the densely settled part of the street and return it to an unstriped state. Thank you for listening, and considering my request.
