The mailboxes were installed parallel and next to curb to reduce impacts and stay in right of way. We have worked with Howard County Office of Transportation to ensure they meet ADA requirements. The pinch points at mailboxes were set to allow 36” minimum width of sidewalk, which is required by ADA. This practice has been utilized in Howard County where constraints exist.

There are a couple mailboxes that are not set at a parallel unfortunately.

And if they are not 36” wide? When will someone be out to see what their width is?

This mailbox and one other were placed directly down the center of the sidewalk. I just cannot comprehend who spends all the money to build a sidewalk if you’re going to stick a mailbox in the middle of it. This is most definitely not ADA compliant and does not leave any room for a wheelchair or stroller to pass.
