A neighbor who also requested speed bumps at this location just received this reply:

“Unfortunately, it was determined that this street is unsuitable for speed reducer placement because Radar speeds below criteria of 30mph at 85%”

We don’t believe this to be the case. Is there a way we can challenge this decision?

I have been living at 616 East 18th Street, off Foster for over 30 years. When the traffic light was installed on Foster & E 18, cars began speeding to make the light. We requested a speed bump then, and our request was denied, because there was no documented "need" for a speedbump. To this day, motorists still speed up to make the light. Fortunately, no one has been struct by one of these motorists, yet. Now, there will be a day care center opening on the corner of Foster & E.18, as soon as the pandemic permits. Safety needs will only increase. Do we really have to wait for a child to be struck by a speeding car before something is done to improve safety on our street? Really, I am sure the residents of our building will chip in to pay the cost.

Good afternoon - Brooklyn Community Board 14 has also recently requested a speed bump for this block. Given the recent denial of the resident's request and the past denials of our previous requests for speed bumps for this block, we encourage residents to reach out to their City Council representatives for additional support. Sometimes political pressure can be helpful to encourage an agency to reconsider a prior denial of a request submitted to enhance public safety in the Council district.

Community Board 14 received the following speed bump request denial on 3/31/2021.

From DOT: “Thank you for your correspondence requesting the installation of a speed reducer on East 18th Street from Newkirk and Foster Avenues, Brooklyn. The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) conducted an investigation to determine the need and feasibility of installing a speed reducer at this location. Factors such as a physical inventory of the street and travel speed were taken into consideration in making our determination. Unfortunately, it was determined that this street is unsuitable for speed reducer placement.”
