For the entire length of Jackson Rd from where it begins at the eastwardly portion at the split off at Huron Rd and until Maple Rd, there is not a single crosswalk (approximately 0.8 miles). However, there are multiple bus stops along the length of the road on each side. Equivalent thoroughfare roads in Ann Arbor have crosswalks (Plymouth, Packard, Maple, etc), which allow for people to safely cross.

In August, I raised this issue and was directed to MDOT (as that portion of Jackson Ave is under their jurisdiction). I spoke with a communications representative, who provided me the following information: "Such a request would need to be initiated by the City. Usually, MDOT would be open to discussing a project with the City. We do not currently have a project programed. However, if the city desires a midblock crossing, and the city is willing to bear the cost (of design and construction), then they would need to apply for a permit from us through our Construction Permit System requesting our permission (in the form of a permit) to do so."

With that said, is there a way I can elevate this to the city's attention to see if it could be considered in future transportation budgets?

Thanks for this. Asked about this years ago as well, came up with the same sorts of dead ends. In particular there should be a crosswalk by Vets Park at Burwood. As I recall, the city did an "impressions" assessment and determined it wasn't warranted. Note that was before converting Jackson from 4 lanes to 2. So I suspect they'll now say it is even less warranted.

I will be very surprised if the city takes this up from A2FixIt. Maybe you ought to start a thread on NextDoor with an aim to organizing a petition. If you do pls alert us here.

Strongly suggest talking to the Ward 5 reps (Erica Briggs is very responsive) so it gets brought up as a priority. I am frankly shocked that the City hasn't brought this up to MDOT since this has been asked for MANY times over the last few years. I really don't understand the priorities of this town sometimes. There are also FB groups dedicated to safe transportation in the city (A2 Safe transport is one).

This is on an upward slope. This makes it difficult to get going again once you stop, in the winter. In addition, the slope makes visibility difficult. For these reasons, I would not like to see one installed there.

Yes, the slope was an issue that I considered when I placed my street cross section. That is why I elected more towards Jackson and Worden. There are also bus stops near that intersection, which would make sense for a crosswalk as well.

The Michigan Department of Transportation has jurisdiction over this street segment. The City has been waiting for MDOT to report back on whether the lane conversion was accepted as a permanent condition. This evaluation was to be completed one year after the installation of the lane conversion; however, the City just received notification that MDOT considers the design permanent. The City will continue to work with MDOT to get the crossings identified in planning documents installed.

Thank you, city, for the update. Are you saying that planning documents which identify specific crosswalk locations exist? If so, how can the public view or otherwise gain access to these planning documents now? And where, precisely, are the crosswalks planned to be installed in said documents?

Also, could you please elabore what "continuing to work with MDOT" actually means from the perspective of the city and the public? How can the public assist the city in working faster?
