Hello all,
Today, 1/20/14, the residents of 4644 N Magnolia Ave had a tree removal company come onto their property beginning at approximately 8am. Surely this is not an issue per city codes regarding noise, but I am inclined to believe that common courtesy could have gone a long way in this situation. I was abruptly awoken at 8am this morning by these workers and it is now nearly 3pm and the tree removal crew is still sawing away. Given that I am a full time student and I work two part time jobs, one of which is primarily from home, this has been an incredible nuisance for me. My studio sits not 20 yards from these folks' yard. Had the residents bothered to inform neighbors that a lengthy day of tree removal was forthcoming, I would have no issue -- I would have stayed with a friend elsewhere.
So, please, can we all agree to be a bit more neighborly, considering that this is a densely populated area with numerous apartments?

May be a violation of Chicago Environmental Noise Ordinance, in which case calling 911 is advised.
ARTICLE XXI. ENVIRONMENTAL NOISE AND VIBRATION CONTROL of Chicago's municipal code: "Noise violation means any sound which (1) is audible at a distance of 600 feet or more from the source; or (2) generates a sound pressure level on the public way exceeding 70 dB(A) when measured at a distance of ten feet or more from the source." chris, do you know ... does "Post to Neighbors" connect directly to 311?

Hello,
Just wanted to post a clarification: "Post to Neighbors" does not route to the city (hence the "Community" label). It exists as a way for neighbors to communicate with one another without sending a SR ticket to the city. Please remember to maintain a respectful tone in your comments.

Thank you, SCF, for clarifying and for offering a community message option.
What would you recommend doing if none of the categories in the drop-down menu for "Chicago" issues reflects what it is we want to post, but we want to notify the city and not just our neighbors?

Hi,
It appears that the city has a more extensive service request list here: http://www.cityofchicago.org/city/en/depts/311/supp_info/request_service.html
If you would like to communicate with an individual from the city about a specific issue, I would recommend finding the relevant department (http://www.cityofchicago.org/city/en/depts.html) to either email or call. Hope that helps!
