Description
I see so many posts here about blight. Ansonia is not alone with it's problems but when you spot something that seems to be blight and expect the city to be all over the problem, no one can quite tell what "blight" is. You can't let homes and business remain rundown and not maintained. It destroys the image of the community, reduces property values, etc.
The blight officer in Ansonia SHOULD be the busiest person in City Hall from what I can tell. Not that other towns don't have the same problem.
I wanted to post a PERFECT example. This is a house on Division Street. I don't know who owns it or care. However, it is sitting on the hill that leads to our main commercial district at Pershing and Division where many new projects are underway and improve the area and bring in more shoppers to the Derby/Ansonia area.
However, due to the odd exit/entrance design of Route 8 anyone coming down north, as we know, has to get off at Seymour Avenue and travel down this portion of Division to get to the stores. THIS mile or so trip from 8 through a residential area is their first impression of the area.
Not only that, the signal at the corner of Pershing and Division near Cumberland Farms is not the best. Traffic backs up right in front of the area of this house causing visitors (and residents) to have to view it in slow motion like a billboard that says "Welcome to Ansonia".
This home not only has a plywood window, it has a darn tree growing out of the roof! I am unsure how the blight regulation is written but if people don't consider THIS residence a perfect example of "blight" then something in the regulations needs revision.
Each time I pass this area I cringe that the house is left in this condition in such a high profile area. Can nothing be done?

Both links bring you the error message:
"We're sorry, this application has either experienced an error or the content you are looking for is not yet available."
That said, it THAT isn't blight Ansonia has massive omissions from it's blight ordinance and fixing it needs to be a top priority. In minutes from the P&Z meeting approving the new Cumberland Farms, comments were made by board members about how great it would be to have such a nice looking new store as one of the first things people see entering Ansonia (I'm paraphrasing, but they are right.. the new store looks terrific.)
However, if you're not arriving in Ansonia via Route 8 sound or Division via passing Shell on the other end this home is your "welcome to Ansonia" before you even pass any retail. Thousands of cars that use Atwater to get to Division see this long before any brand new developments meant to spruce up Ansonia's image.

I'm not rendering an opinion, just pointing to the tools that your city currently has.

With a visual comparison the now removed buildings were visually 120% better to look at by any visitor or resident compared to what many in this complaint Page refer to as the Farrell, Farrell Lab and associated incubator buildings.
Why does this town historically make decisions that are always AssBackwards which hurt its future for the coming generations?
Generations abandoned the town out of frustration, disorganization and lack of community communication.
Everyone should realize the shocking fact, the middle class is being extinguished forever due to new world economics and subsidized living is the wave of the future.
It just so happens Ansonia is a benchmark in this arena.
Thanks for the free ride Ansonia and paying for my 8 kids education

The generations that were here abandon the town at first chance out of frustration, disorganization and lack of community communication.
Everyone should realize the shocking fact, the middle class is being extinguished forever due to new world economics and subsidized living in the wave of the future.

Gibbons,
Thank you for your contribution. However, it may have been better to have made it it's own thread. I am also upon re-reading now exactly sure what your point is except you are upset about Ansonia's actions on Olsen Drive. I think?
THAT SAID, back to the thread's topic.
If the home pictures with a plywood window and "tree" growing from it's roof is not blight by definition in Ansonia, it SHOULD BE. You can't tell me that is how Ansonia officials want thousands of motorists heading to the major commercial district to be greeted.

Thank you mystery "Guest".
I did not see any number on the home and had to use the mapping software here to guess it's number.
Since you are sure it's not 108 Division, would you be kind enough to tell us what the correct number is?

Thanks You Guest!
So, I trust Ansonia is inspecting 85 DIVISION STREET to see what part of the blight ordinance has been violated?
(The owner of said home seeing this post, being rightfully embarrassed beyond words and cleaning up the property before being told to would be nice.)

Wow, Ansonia's Blight officer is hard at work!

I am saddened to report the "roof tree" is in full bloom over a year after this was posted the Ansonia's Blight Officer seems to have not done a thing to contact the owner, etc.
What a fantastic way to welcome shoppers to the Pershing Drive/Division Street area!

Homeowners can't let their houses "rot" to the point trees are growing out of the roof! This has been this way for years. If someone there recently passed, I am sorry to hear that. If you do not have the money to maintain your property SELL IT and rent or purchase something you can afford. Thousands of Ansonia residents spend a fortune keeping their homes attractive. Those who won't should find a solution not sit there and let their homes fall apart and board up windows with Plywood.
Thank you Planner!!! I was not aware there WASN'T a current blight officer. I see the Mayor (who promised to fix such things) has some work to do to catch up. Healey Ford can come first.

Thank you William. YES, by some miracle this house no longer has a tree growing out of the roof!
However, the homeowner seems to like having a piece of rotting plywood covering a second story window as it reminds an eyesore. How much is ONE window at Home Depot and a handyman to install it?!
