Thank you for reporting your concerns about street safety in Alameda. Your report will help inform the City of Alameda’s work to achieve our Vision Zero goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and severe injuries. We will use street safety reports, including yours, in combination with crash data and equity indicators to prioritize and design street safety investments. This evaluation will generally happen on an annual basis, with some exceptions for clear and pressing trends. Issues that the City deems to be immediate safety concerns will be elevated for quick action.

Planning for pedestrian safety doesn't just mean slowing cars down where you can see them and monitor them more easily. If you slow traffic down too much on the major routes intended for cars, cars will push onto residential streets, too often speeding as through traffic. When drivers use digital mapping, the 'fastest route' comes up as residential streets. That's because of poor traffic flow on major through streets. Lincoln is a great example of a road that let's cars flow. Encinal is pretty good. Otis was good. Grand is terrible. 9 out of 10 times I have to stop at every light. Lights should be timed fro traffic flow. Park is terrible now, pushing cars onto Oak, Walnut, Willow and all those minor streets in between. Constitution is pretty good - lights could be timed better for through flow. Atlantic and Main are pretty good. High street is pretty good. Buena Vista and Atlantic are good. It just slays me that Otis now has bike lanes. It should be Shoreline for cruisers, Otis for quick through traffic, and San Jose and Shoreline for bikers.
