Hi Brian, Please participate with Friends of Edgewood Park and together we can get a sign. The two signs were stolen a number of years ago. We did some research, but have been unsuccessful finding the wording of the original signs. I'd be happy to share the information that we do have and go forward from there. Please email firendsofedgewoodpark@gmail.com
A few ideas, maybethey have been explored and If the New Haven Museum and local history archives have been exhausted:
- vintage postcards/antique dealer may have an image
- barnard school staff/students over the years may have pictures as the park is an extension of the school practically
- determine where statute was cast; determine if records exist
- determine who commissioned it; sometimes private groups/regiments; see if there are records
- Use New Britian as proxy. Same sculptor, same three conflicts. Thatnis intact with plaque/inscription.
Plaque has been gone for years. No photo - already checked at public library, at New Haven Museum history library, and on line. The Friends of Edgewood Park would be happy to help organize a committee to make this happen. Email friendsofedgewoodpark@gmail.com
Michael Marino sculpted the statue of the Spanish American War Marine in 1924 and it was dedicated in 1926. Two bronze plaques are missing - one of which whs a memorial to the U.S.S. Maine (cast from metal from that ship,) The sculptor was from New Haven and the statue was cast at the American Art Foundry in N.Y. The dedication plaque was stolen in the 1970's. The statue was restored in 2008 as part of an initiative to clean and repair its public memorials.
A. Don't be too harsh on that scrap dealer, they pay by weight and don't look too closely at what's in the load. It was just scooped up as "non-ferrous" by a pay loader and shipped off.
B. On the internet I saw an article saying the entire statue was cast from metal from the Maine, along with a bunch of other memorials.
C. Hard to believe there are no records of this memorial somewhere. If there's a closer date we could search the Register's archives.
Thanks to the hard work of Friends of Edgewood and the generosity of a local neighbor the plans for restoration are underway. Still a good deal of work to do but in progress!

I would help kick in some money if there is a fundraiser for the plaque.
Have you posted out to the Edgewood park facebook group asking if anybody has a photo of the plaque?
If it's only been gone for a couple of years I bet someone has a photo.
