Description
There have been several car accidents an many more near misses due to a flawed intersection design that has cars regularly illegally passing turning cars and limited sight lines when exiting (legally) from Dunwoody Station Subdivision.

times to our city council in vane concerning the dangerous intersection. Every time we try to leave our only entrance to our subdivision we put our lives to say nothing of our children lives in danger. Are they going to wait for someone to be killed there before they act. I am appalled that nothing has been done.

Although Mt. Vernon Hwy/Road is seen as a thoroughfare of a major road, in fact it is access to over 900 homes and families traveling to our city, schools, daily commutes, & errands. At least 300 homes (does not include Fulton County apartment homes) have no other exit from their neighborhood. At this time unless traffic is backed up & stopped on Mt. Vernon the average speed must be 45 to 50 mph which makes turning from our neighborhood -- Left or Right-- virtually impossible. When traffic backs up -- for either direction -- only a few drivers acknowledge a"Do Not Block Intersection" protocol. Additionally, to make a turn across 1 lane of traffic is incredibly hazardous since drivers are traveling 45 mph in the oncoming lane.
The problem is more than a signage issue, although I have almost been t-boned several times by drivers who ignored the "No Passing" sign -- together with BLARED horning-- as I turned into Dunwoody Station or is it too wide a road w/ extra lanes. It is a systemic problem that needs to be fully assessed considering all possible resolutions including a traffic light. Twice in the last 30 days there has been accidents along this corridor.
I will soon have teenage drivers & my heart stops to think they will be pulling out of & turning into these neighborhoods. I am reluctant to allow them to ride their bikes in this environment. Please analyze this with safety in mind.

The westbound turn lane is confirmed to have a turn arrow. Additionally a "Do Not Pass" sign has been placed to make this an enforceable intersection. Issues regarding violation can be reported to the Dunwoody Police Department.
Please report issues such as this to the City of Dunwoody Police Department by calling 678-382-6900 or submitting your concern online at http://dunwoodyga.gov/index.php?section=dunwoodypd_comments_concerns_complaints. Emergency issues should be reported by calling 911.

Lazy - pass it on to someone else.
You're right. Someone did die and no action taken. Where's the flashing speed sign? Where are the police handling out tickets?

Albert Einstein gave the definition of insanity . . ."doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." This is insane . . .
This situation is not safer, nor is it resolved by re-installing the "Do Not Pass" sign that was removed when there was sidewalk construction. This is the same "Do Not Pass" sign that Dekalb County deemed solved the traffic issue. I thought we determined Dekalb County wasn't fit to address our issues & cityhood would provide control over concerns such as this one. Fifty percent of the times I have almost been hit on a left-hand turn was during the years there was a "Do Not Pass" sign in place.
There were other issues addressed when this See/Click/Fix was researched. It included providing for pedestrian crossing between the Dekalb/Fulton County line and the Ashford Dunwoody/Mt. Vernon Intersection. By closing out this request the conversations & proposals for that issue/request is closed without consideration. This need is very real intertwining with the safety of this intersection.
I understand several proposals for solutions have been made for this corridor. We seem to concur that accidents, deaths or the presence of police are the only methods to correct the bad driving issues. A different solution that provides drivers guidance how to proceed seems to be what is needed. Although the sign re-installation may be the lowest cost alternative, it doesn't change drivers' behaviors or give them clearer guidance. An example of how the City of Dunwoody has given drivers better guidelines for how to respond in a given scenario are the new flashing yellow caution turn arrows -- it turns red before flashing yellow; now I know/drivers know the time is up to turn left; turning left should be approached with caution -- it is a clear communicator of traffic protocol/laws. I look to the City of Dunwoody to propose a similar solution here.
The current situation nor the stop-gap solution DO NOT WORK, how do we enable drivers to REALLY understand that we want traffic to travel at reasonable speeds and NOT back up when a car needs to make a left-hand turn? This is a major thoroughfare. We should be considering how to SAFELY keep traffic moving while enabling SAFE turns. Acceleration/Deceleration Lanes are confusing (the road widens; the lanes are NOT long enough to actually accelerate or decelerate, traffic CAN move safely around when there is visibility (Trailridge side). Our goals should be to continue the traffic at a safe speed, enable a car to SAFELY pause in a turn lane until a break in traffic occurs or until the traffic has backed-up at the light. Along with this goal pedestrians should be included in the solution -- both those WALKING ALONG Mt. Vernon, as well CROSSING Mt. Vernon.
