The Village Board is currently considering such a proposal to change a three of the four streets to one-way as described. Russell is not under consideration for one way designation because the exit from the municipal lot empties onto Russell, so two way is needed to allow for traffic flow out of the lot. Residents on these streets were recently surveyed. Only a few responded withT some in favor and some opposed. I encourage you to share your comments with Village Hall.

i agree with turning these into alternating one way streets. clermont st is one of the worst, coming towards 9W there is a hump in the road and there are always a mini van parked there and you have to travel on the other side of the road and if a car in coming the other way there is going to be an accident!

I dont' know who is in charge of traffic, signs and such but they have been a dud so far. So if anyone with influence reads these posts, please wake up traffic people and do the right thing.

As stated in a previous comment, the Village Board is currently considering designating some of these streets as one-way. If you want to encourage them to act, I suggest submitting your comments/complaints directly to Village Hall at 43 Partition Street. I have shared this comment thread with the Village mayor and trustees, but anonymous posts to an online forum do not carry the weight of a formal written letter or complaint form submitted to Village Hall. Designating streets one-way requires a public hearing before a final vote by the Village Board, so this process takes awhile. Opposition from some residents of the streets caused the Village Board to put off any decision on the matter, so your written input in favor of one-way designation may help move this process forward.

Kitten Meow does not know what she's talking about.If there are events at Diamond Mills or in the Village and Clermont st is one way then those who live there are trapped eitrher in their homes or may not be able to get home.Its fine to develop a Village but not at the expense of residents.One way parking is in effect but not enforced enough.Residents are constantly parked the wrong way.I can tell you as a resident of Clermont St that the first time emergency vehicles cannot get through the Village is going to have legal problems.

marjorie i have respect for you, but i do know what i am talking about. i have been traveling clermont st from st. marys church area to work every week day for 27+ years also when i go to the heights or kingston i take the same route. turn onto clermont st....stop sign...skip across washington ave, back onto clermont....NOW THIS IS WHERE THE PROBLEM IS.....there is a "slow" sign on the right, which is also on a little hill......THERE IS ALWAYS A CAR OR VAN PARKED RIGHT BELOW THIS SIGN, I MUST TRAVEL ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE ROAD TO GET PAST THE PARK VEHICLE. IF THERE IS A CAR COMING THE OTHER WAY, I AM IN A BLIND SPOT FROM ONCOMING TRAFFIC AND THERE WILL HE A HEAD ON CRASH. maybe there should be a "no parking from here to corner" sign posted instead of a one way street. i do not want to put my fellow high paying village tax neighbors in harms way if there is an emergency. go check out what i am talking about marjorie, who knows maybe it is your car parked there.

The comment you make here is that you are traveling Clermont St but are you a resident who will be directly impacted?Perhaps you should travel Russell St or Post St if you're not happy with Clermont..
My car is never parked on the street because I have a driveway.I wonder if you want to change everything that you dislike that's along your route.If you were a resident it would be one thing but because you're passing through is unfair.I believe there should be more police enforcement of those who are illegally parked but don't make an entire street suffer for a few.How would you like to be trapped on the street during an event and it would not be the same as the one way by the library.They don't have anything stopping them from entering or leaving such as those on Clermont St. Which would be impacted by Partition st traffic flow.

Marjorie-- I am a resident of the Albany area now, but I went to St. Mary's Elementary School many years ago as a young child, and I remember how dangerous and narrow those streets were even back then, with all the school busses and traffic and parked cars.

My original post in this thread was because now, as an adult, when I drive through those streets, I am amazed at how little has been done to make the traffic flow on those 4 streets safer! The amount of traffic in that area has increased considerably in the past 30 years, and the new hotel being built in that area is going to make things even more unsafe!

I was merely suggesting that if those 4 streets were made alternating one-way streets, (and also improve the sidewalks and parking situation), that we can prevent some tragedies from occurring in the future. There are a lot of little kids in that area, and if traffic was only travelling in one direction, it would make it safer for everyone in that whole neighborhood, all the way up to Cedar Street.

Are you kidding me???I don't want to seem disrespectful but as an Albany resident you want to make the residents of Clermont St to be trapped in their homes because you don't care for the traffic flow.I also want to say that I have lived on this street 15 and am unaware of any tragedies?Children should not be playing in the street anywhere & I raised 5 children here with no problems.Perhaps anonymous should reveal themselves so a real dialogue could happen.

and i will continue to use this street with caution as always because it is a narrow street and i do realize this. some people need to really open their eyes and see this instead of taking it personally. this could possible could save their lives and help them to NOT be trapped. i think the firetrucks or police would know what way to enter if it was turned into a one way street. if there were no parking on the street 365 this could work too! happy day and try to get some enjoyment out of it. :o)

I am a resident of Clermont Street, and yes, the street is dangerous and should be one way. About 6, 7 years ago, Saugerties had a traffic study and a public meeting. My wife gathered a petition of about two dozen Clermont Street residents who signed it who were in favor of making it one way and presented it at the meeting. She was thanked, and it was dropped. They didn't even consider it.

The street can only fit two cars, width-wise, and that is when the streets are clear. In wintertime, there's barely any room to park a car on the street, and if you can, then you can barely drive around it. Trucks have had to turn around in the wintertime because there is no room to pass with a parked car in the snow.

And I myself average about one close call for an accident a year from either the Washington Ave. intersection onto the Clermont St. hill, or by exiting Partition St. onto Clermont. The street is so narrow at that intersection that it necessitates turning onto the opposite side of the street. Even when driving slow, there are some very bad blind spots. And that doesn't even count the usual idiots who think the street is the Indianapolis Speedway and actually speed up the hill before reaching the Washington Ave. intersection.

Come to the Occupy Saugerties meeting this month and ask to speak about being ignored by local govt regarding a safety issue and how you feel that YOU the people are not being heard. We are gaining in numbers and gaining in influence. The more that join in, the better a job we can do. It's at the senior center...on a Monday..not sure if it's the 2nd or 3rd. Can you go to the facebook page? It will be announced there. Occupy Saugerties.

The Town has no jurisdiction in the Village.It is the Mayor who makes decisions.All these comments from people with no visible names.

I would not complain or object to Clermont St being one way if there was not an increase in traffic on Partition St BUT alot has changed in 6 or 7 years.Divison St does not have anything hindering either side of the street but Clermont St could be closed off if there is an event at Diamond Mills.We could be trapped on the street or unable to return home.Maybe limiting parking near the corners for increased visibilty would help but I do not want to be trapped in my home.

I'm wondering what end of Clermont St everyone who wants it one way lives?There's a big difference if you're on the end which starts at Partition and ends at Washington Ave.If someone lives between Washington ave & St Mary's church they would not have a problem with the street being one way.Its those of us on the partition St end that could have major problems.

I would think the best way would be to make Clermont one-way from Washington Ave. to Partition Street. The turn from Partition onto Clermont is dangerous because a turning car enters the street blindly without knowing if a car is coming down Clermont. A car could also enter Clermont from Washington Ave. without worrying if another car is coming up the hill. Allow entrances from Partition onto Post Street. People on Post Street can just drive one street over to Clermont, not have to worry about crashing at the Partition intersection, and just drive up to Post.

I could even see Montgomery Street being kept as two-way since it is wider and Russell Street also is, because of the number of school buses that go through there as well as other larger vehicles.

And I highly doubt that Clermont is going to be shut down because of events at Diamond Mills. Supposedly, or at least, that's what we've all been told, there's enough parking in their new lots. And even then, Clermont is pretty out of the way for someone to want to park there and walk down to Diamond Mills. The only time I've ever been "trapped" in my home is for roughly an hour after the July 4 parade when everyone is leaving. Hardly anything worth getting upset about.

The streets are too narrow, and TWO-WAY streets with parking on both sides just isn't safe or efficient! Wouldn't it at least be a little easier (and safer) if you only had to look in ONE direction while crossing the street?? Wouldn't it be easier if you knew that cars were only coming from ONE direction when you're trying to pull out of your driveway or pull away from the curb??

How hard is it to just open your eyes and see "OOOPS!! This is a ONE-WAY street! Looks like I'm gonna have to drive ONE BLOCK OVER so that I'm going in the right direction!"

I mean, this is not rocket-science, people!

It's a very simple concept; larger cities and towns do it all the time!

Let's get with it, Saugerties! Let's get out of the 1890's!
