Drivers on Orange Street consistently ignore well marked crosswalks making it very difficult for pedestrains to cross the street. As stated in the CT DMV Driver's Manual, "Drivers must yield the right-of-way at all times to pedestrians who are in a marked or unmarked crosswalk." Even standing in the crosswalk cars will fly past you at 15 - 25 mils over the speed limit.

I agree that these cross walks are problematic. I'm a driver, and I look for people in the crosswalks and stop to let them cross (often much to the chagrin of the people behind me). However, I will also say that the parking on the street makes it very difficult to see if people are there until you are almost upon them, and at night, the lighting is extremely bad. Additionally, the quantity of night bicylists who do not use lights is alarming, particularly as the road narrows... it can be a rather harrowing drive to the highway.

It's beautiful, I was downtown last night, & noticed a big factor seems to be cars blocking line of sight to the crosswalk by being illegally parked: I saw a few officers who are out JUST for that type of issue and were giving tickets out. I spoke with them & they said they are exclusively on quality of life/parking that causes real problems by putting people in danger.

I'm hoping that the new emphasis of the NHPD to ticket violators, as well as a comprehensive educational campaign that the City will be undertaking will help solve some of this problem. We recently worked with the City to get them to pilot the In-road pedestrian signage at a number of locations across the neighborhood - my hope is that we can have the signs at every relevant crosswalk up and down Orange and State Streets.

There's a nice in-street sign here now. I think that's about as good as it's going to get. I live on Pearl St and I've never had a problem crossing the street since the sign went in.

In fact, I've been on my bicycle, in the road on Pearl St, and drivers on Orange St have stopped for me. That actually kind of annoyed me; I'm a vehicle when I'm on my bike, not a pedestrian!

I've had trouble on some occasions, and on other occasions, I have been able to cross just fine. I too have had cars stop for me when on my bike. That doesnt annoy me - I think it is very nice of them. If only EVERYONE were so curteous. I've had more peole yell at me to get off the road then give me the opportunity to cross streets.
