Thank you for reporting your concerns about street safety in Alameda. San Jose is identified as a future Neighborhood Greenway in the Active Transportation Plan (adopted by City Council in December 2022), with prioritization to be implemented by 2024. This will be a traffic-calmed pedestrian- and bicycle-priority street (still open to autos), and will include crossing improvements at key intersections. Project managers will receive your report when designing the corridor. More information here: www.activealameda.org. Join the Active Transportation Plan mailing list at www.alamedaca.gov/subscribe.
Examples of crossing and speed management interventions on Neighborhood Greenways (sometimes called bicycle boulevards) are here: https://www.activealameda.org/files/assets/public/departments/alameda/transportation/bikeboulevards_11x17.pdf. Speed humps are one of the options.
Your report will help inform the City of Alameda’s work to achieve our Vision Zero goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and severe injuries. Staff will retain your report and refer to it the next time we undertake a project on this street, whether it is pavement resurfacing or a corridor update. For selection of new safety improvement projects, the City refers to High Injury Corridors, equity indicators, Active Transportation Plan projects, and street resurfacing needs, augmented by Street Safety Concerns.
