Oh, and if you are crossing from the bakery towards the library, the walk signal lights up but the cars turning LEFT onto NEWARK AVE from SUMMIT AVE, they are behind the pedestrians, so you can't even see them until they cut in front of you as you are in the middle of the crosswalk! It is not just one car either, when one turns... they all go in a chain and pedestrians get stuck in the middle of the road because there are a dozen cars just turning. I have had to wait for the lights to cycle through multiple times because it was unsafe to cross even though I had the pedestrian cross signal. Cars are faster than feet, there is no way for a pedestrian to win when a car is committed to turning left as soon their light turns green.

This intersection was the subject of a walking audit earlier this year. Althea, please ask the Mobility team if they have any information on that.

This intersection is overdue for a serious redesign. I too would like to know the outcome of the walking audit. These issues should not be political and yet somehow in Ward C it is. Its terrifying for pedestrians and not great for drivers either. Many times I have witnessed cars running the lights, totally obvious to any wrong doing. Our library is a vital resource for the vulnerable in our community and they should be safe when getting to and from this building.

How are these issues political? Meaning, why do you feel this way? What has happened to confirm this? I want to know how you feel so if it is true, we can correct it and if it is not then we can regain your trust.

Hi Althea, I was referring to the city council level re political. Our council person has not always been supportive of public walking audits and the safety efforts the city has tried to implement in our ward. Thank you as always for your support in fielding these issues and requests. You are incredibly trustworthy :)

Got it. Sometimes people believe that other areas get more attention, but the Department of Infrastructure works hard to make sure every ward and neighborhood gets the attention and help that is unique to that area.

I was going to mention the walking audit, too. Althea -- this was done several months ago by volunteers with traffic in driving rain on a very cold day and . . . crickets from traffic. That is how it's political. A walking audit done for show, and then no followup. People are correct in saying this intersection is poorly designed and engineered, the signals are poor for both pedestrians and cars, the signage and street markings are confusing. It needs a MAJOR overhaul. Please, some action on this issue.

March 27 the walking audit was done. That's 9 months, enough time to have a baby.

The lengthening of the pedestrian signal was sent to our traffic signal contractor. Was it not lengthened?
