I'm planning to call the Department if Children and Family on Tuesday to report these people who put their children at risk by allowing them to ride ATVs. I suggest everybody reports them to the DCF. The phone number is: 1-800-842-2288

If you know where dirt bikes, quads and ATVs are garaged, report it to the New Haven Police ATV hotline at (203) 946-6098. Or, call your NHPD district manager. By reporting where these cars ATV and dirt bikes are stored, your district manager can build a case for getting a search warrant and eventually they will be able to confiscate the machines. But, first they need to build a case. They need to gather evidence.

For example, in the Edgewood/Dwight Neighborhood it is Sgt. Steve Torquati at (203) 946-7597. In the Whalley, Edgewood, Beaver Hills (WEB) Neighborhood it is Lt. Makiem Miller at (203) 589-3318 or mmiller@newhavenct.net. They will investigate and can confiscate the vehicles.

Then, contact your alderman to put pressure on the city to make this issue a priority for the police. The Edgewood ward is ward 24: call Evette Hamilton at (203) 508-5426 orWard24@newhavenct.net.

If you want IMMEDIATE action, call the non-emergency (dispatch) NHPD phone number at 203-946-6316. Tell the dispatcher that your district manager (use their name) said to call and have some patrols sent to your area. Then ask the responding officer to CALL YOU BACK. This is very important. Otherwise, you call will fall into a black hole. By asking for a call back you are ensuring that the NHPD will take action and then be held accountable to you for what action is taken.

We need enough people to report these illegal machines, call the police, and work with their NHPD district managers. There are 100,000 of us in this city and only 100 or so of these dirt bike and ATV riders who are ruining our quality of life. We all need to raise this issue with our police and city government. With enough pressure, laws will change and policing tactics will adjust.

He will respond to emails and calls. If you report a known ATV or dirt bike location to him, he will investigate and confiscate the machines.

Most times when I call the ATV hotline it doesn't go anywhere! I agree with Edgewood Villager -- this is a major issue and to make it worse the riding lessons on the quads and dirt bikes take place in Edgewood Park near the playground.

I've watched a quad come out of the house right across the street from Edgewood Park go down Chapel and into the park all while a cop watched!!! We've also had issues with the dirt bikes in Edgewood while running. I have been calling this into the non emergency number for about 7 years and the issue only gets worse year after year!!! Making me give up that this issue will ever be addressed until someone is run over by these guys

i find this so ridiculous. when we were kids people where doing a lot worse than riding some dirt bikes and atv's if everyone here is so concerned with kids riding all over the place find an area to make a dirt track for them or something. they've created a community between them and honestly i'd rather deal with a group of kids on bikes than hearing someones been shot or arrested for guns and drugs. atv's and dirt biking all can be professional careers. they just desperately need to be steered into the direction of that so if their hearts desire it they can pursue that. instead of trying to shun them from the community embrace it and find ways for it to be legal for them to ride and have a good time with their friends. anyone here can report a problem and wait for the city to solve it. a community that suggests positive options will always be the best community.

Daniel- I understand your point however there's some major things you're missing here.
1. Where would an appropriate place be to set up some place to ride? This is a small city and our limited green/park space is just that- parks.
2. Who would pay for such a thing? The City and the State are both broke.
3. Riding dirtbikes/ATV's on city streets is illegal. So is selling drugs. So is shooting people. So is shoplifting, etc. Which crimes should be "OK"? Which crimes should we tell young people that it's OK to commit because you could some day make money off of it?
4. Those of us who aren't breaking the law by illegally disrupting the peace and recklessly endangering people are also a community. What are the illegal dirt bike riders doing for us? Why can't they construct for us a respectful zone where people don't break the law and endanger eachother's lives?

City streets and parks are no place for these machines. Especially when the riders of these machines routinely break all traffic laws (speeding, running red lights and stop signs, etc), are uninsured, unregistered, and endanger pedestrians (particularly small children and the elderly) and legal motorists in the street.

Not to mention the noise and emissions pollution.

These machines were designed for rural off-road tracks in unpopulated areas.

There is no place for them in a city.

By request , or popular vote , due to high demand , We can stage a mock , concocted big bike bust , one hotdogging individual will fly about , park the motorbike where all can see , have a news reporting outfit show up , arrest the dirty little bird via 15 cops, even stage a beat down all for the enjoyment of do gooders , THE MOB. Screams of crucify him ...

no, I'd rather have the police quietly locate and confiscate the dirt bike, per the law, in the hopes of improving quality of life for all (elderly, children, disabled and working adults) in the outer neighborhoods.
