Every year the congestion is growing on the end of I-787. There needs to be better connection at the Interchange of I-87/Thruway, I-787, and US 9W, such a roundabout for all three roads, or a fly over ramp that connects I-787 directly to US 9W South, bypassing the Thruway entrance.

Another interesting alternative which has been proposed (besides only upgrading the Exit 23 connections from the Thruway) would be to build an "Exit 23A" or "Exit 23B" interchange (whatever the proper terminology) at the overpass on Route 85. I agree that this would be a sensible long-term approach to alleviating the humungous rush-hour traffic backups currently occurring at Exits 23 and 24.
It would accomplish this by removing a substantial amount of traffic from Exits 23 and 24, thus allowing more traffic to flow in and out of Albany's "Uptown" area, instead of forcing all traffic to use the already-congested Exit 23 and 24 interchanges.
We have numerous overpasses and underpasses in the Capital District which cross the Thruway, Interstate 787, and Interstate 90 which have no connections to the secondary roads! It is a waste of gas to have to drive clear across the county just to get off of or onto a main exit, when there are so many over- and underpasses which have tons of space to construct exits directly onto the secondary roads right there!
To me, it seems illogical (and very poor planning) to require motorists on the Thruway to drive an extra 8 miles out of their way either direction between exits, when there is already a 4-lane overpass on Route 85 which could be very easily converted to a simple interchange, including toll booths, if necessary.
I think the Thruway Authority, NYSDOT and CDTC should seriously consider this option for the long-term strategic planning for the next 5-10 years if the Capital District wants to be a strong competitor in the economy of Upstate NY.
