It's hard to see from a photo how bad this is. There's no way to avoid this huge hole in the road, and at best it's very jolting to drive on that street. It's unsafe and can cause damage to cars -- one person has already had to get new tires because of damage to the sidewalls. Some people are trying to avoid it by driving into oncoming traffic in the lanes going the other way. I'm afraid to drive there now, it's gotten so bad. A fix would be greatly appreciated!

I'm confused. Are you telling me that you have forwarded the report to Caltrans, or are you asking me to do it myself? Since Caltrans is likely to take staff reports more seriously than hose from individual community members, I would appreciate the City of Emeryville to follow up on this on their end as well. Since this issue has been brought to your attention it means that you now have liability to act upon it and avoid further damage or injury.

This issue has not yet been resolved, regardless of whose responsibility it is. As such I am keeping the issue open until it is actually fixed.

The hard truth is that Emeryville doesn't have any jurisdiction or authority over that roadway, and leaving this open here might lead to people thinking that they're contributing to a solution by voting it up here on See Click Fix. No amount of discussion here on this site will help get it fixed. It's a state highway, entirely within CalTrans' jurisdiction. The link provided above to submit a request to CalTrans for maintenance is really the only way to get the problem addressed. Unfortunately, we don't have any inside track with CalTrans for getting faster attention to these kinds of issues - I agree it would be good if we did, but it doesn't work that way.

This is on MacArthur, not on the highway, so how is it under CalTrans's jurisdiction?

I think it's actually the 580 East offramp for the Macarthur exit. I reported it to the CalTrans website just now. I hope others will too.

CalTrans has jurisdiction over state highways in addition to the freeways. Locally, that includes Ashby Avenue and San Pablo Avenue. Each city has a maintenance agreement with CalTrans, which is often quite an old agreement, that defines who has responsibility for what within the CalTrans right of way. CalTrans controls the roadway curb to curb, and the signal timing as well.

The pothole I am referring to in the complaint is definitely the offramp - it's only accessible from freeway. Are you referring to different potholes?

No I'm referring to the same one, just didn't know something that physically far from a freeway could be considered a ramp. Too bad, as it seems CalTrans is way less responsive than the city of Oakland -- so who knows when this very dangerous situation will be fixed.
