There have been more and more reports recently about the possibility of exposure to toxic substances in the "tire crumb" material used in many artificial turf fields. This one in particular, behind Graham and Parks Elementary School, is used by many children every day of the week. We often find a large amount of it in our sons' shoes when we get home. (See picture.)

It seems to me that Cambridge City should take the lead on this issue, and work proactively to use proven nontoxic materials wherever our children play. The EPA is apparently doing an in-depth study, but it will be some time before their results are clear. Why wait? When our children may be endangered, we should act without delay.

According to the group EHHI,
"The relationship between exposures affecting the rubber workers and those experienced by people using athletic fields, or children in playgrounds covered with ground-up rubber tire material is not known, but we do know that many of the same chemicals that rubber workers are exposed to are being released from the ground-up rubber tire crumbs." Thank you for this message. The City works to provide the most appropriate material for fields throughout the City. We have shared this with the Deputy Commissioner for Public Works and when the Graham & Parks field is scheduled for replacement, we will work to investigate the safest and most appropriate materials to use.

I brought this up to Judy Amendola in October 2014, she told the principal at Graham and Parks and showed her the press articles I forwarded. Attached is a recent picture of the turf pieces at Graham and Parks school clinging to my wet hand.

For many years, Massachusetts has had a very strict law that families with children under 6 can't rent a place which has lead paint, and I think it's impossible that city officials don't know whether or not the old recycled tires used on kids' playing fields contain lead or other toxic substances. This is ridiculous.

Dear Public Works--we cannot wait until the Graham & Parks field is scheduled to be replaced, action needs to be taken now. And we object to the claim that the most appropriate material is currently in place when clearly there is ample literature showing that this is most likely not the case.

hello public works, no word from you for a long time, where are you on this time sensitive issue? This has been brought up to the school in October 2014? It is now June 2016. How soon can you redo the surface of the playing field at graham and parks school with artificial turf without the shredded tire bits? It is an awful shape anyway from many years of wear and tear. You don't want to wait for a class action lawsuit when someone develops cancer do you? The lives of small kids are at stake here, this is a very serious issue with copious amounts of recent literature and media coverage linking these shredded tire bits to cancer, especially in young sensitive kids and athletes that are regularly being exposed to these shredded tire bits. What is your timeline for remediation action?

Hello public works, our kids keep playing on this field everyday; the kids from the school and the neighborhood. The situation has been the same for years now, little pieces of tire on their clothes, shoes, even in their hair. And it is being tracked into the school and into our homes. We are worried about the safety of our kids. Please hear us and do something about this. Thank you for your consideration of this important matter.

We're now living in a country with effectively no EPA: it's on us to see to the safety of our children--and ourselves--at the municipal and state levels. I live across the street from the Graham and Parks School: my godchildren play on that field. And I grew up in Akron amid the carnage wreaked by the rubber factories: most of my childhood friends have had cancer and/or other auto-immune diseases, many are dead before their time. We don't pay taxes so you'll rush out to paint over graffiti like the word "orchid" with a flower painted on the back of a street sign! We pay so you can dig up and remove the toxic material in a playing field. That this issue has been "under investigation" for a year without resolution or action is unacceptable.

My impression is that now that this says Acknowledged it isn't really on the city's radar any more as a place to discuss. I'd call or open a new ticket.

The crumb rubber field at Graham & Parks was recently replaced with a new field using sand as a fill. The City is evaluating all synthetic field options as these fields come up for replacement.
