Cars are now "double parked" in the bike lane every day. I hate this street, total bummer for residents making a go of it!

Comcast trucks, postal delivery vehicles, and an assortment of construction equipment are parked within the space between the parked cars and north sidewalk, presumably a bike lane, on a daily basis. I guess its great for them to have a place to park, but I was not aware that a picture of a bicycle implied "park your commercial trucks here".

FWIW, calling Cambridge Police (non-emergency # 617-349-3300) seems to get a fairly rapid response.

No thanks to the ups driver who read the ticket, and then walked on to the next delivery without moving the truck.

Can we at least ask city vehicles not to park in the bike lane for hours at a time?

Thank you for providing this information. We have shared these photos and reports with the Public Works and the Water departments to remind staff that they are not to park in/obstruct the bike lane here or at locations throughout the city. As you can see from the Police response, calling and reporting issues of double parking as they occur to 617-349-3300 so that officers can be dispatched is the best course of action.

Maybe the lesson learned from this is that there is a total lack of legal parking/stopping/loading on CPD. Maybe removing the bike lanes (and directing people to use the bike path -- which is much more scenic and doesn't have cars on it) and making the street have 30 minute parking on one side would cure the problem. No amount of ticketing City vehicles is going to fix it.

I agree that there needs to be temporary stopping, but telling cyclists "don't use this road" seems like a poor option. That bike path does not go to the offices on CPD - even connecting in at the far end of CPD, anyone on a bike would need to come back down the street to reach the buildings. It is also very poorly cleared during the winter, to the point of being unusable after a snow and frequently after some refreezing as well.

There were some new signs going in on the right side of the street this morning. Hopefully they're changing the rules for the parking spots protecting the bike lane to prohibit parking there all day, which will free up those spots for temporary stopping.

Every building on CPD has a loading dock, as the name would imply thats the most logical place to park a vehicle for loading/unloading. They don't need to park on the road. Still not sure why that hasn't been implemented by 125/150 for example.

I talked to security at 125. They told me that they provide access to the LD to shipping companies, for instance. They actually give them a card so they don't even need to call. But the shipping companies choose not to use it. I also spoke to Kayla Pulliam of CBRE/NE who said "we cannot force them to utilize the loading docks to deliver/pickup packages". She seems convinced that CBRE/NE can't cause the delivery drivers to change their behavior.

Doesn't help for more casual loading/unloading, though, e.g. picking up or dropping off passengers. While it would help a little bit to get the shipping companies to use the loading docks as they park for medium periods (10 minutes) in very awkward places, streets need places for people to stop.

This is largely about incentives. Delivery drivers for FedEx and UPS are incentivized (and their performance is probably measured) by how many packages they deliver per hour. Having to move the truck from loading dock to loading dock doesn't make a lot of sense for them. They instead park out front between two buildings so they can more easily deliver to both, because that is what makes sense for how they are measured.

Their incentives also explain why they don't care about receiving a ticket (from a few comments up). The driver doesn't care about the ticket. And UPS doesn't either. One ticket compared to the cost of doing business to ensure their packages are delivered on time? That's no contest. How many tickets do you think drivers get in downtown Boston or in NYC?
