Per SHA, summarized: "The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) appreciates your interest in roadway lighting. A number of interchanges have roadway lighting systems which are nearing the end of their service life and are experiencing outages from underground electrical faults as wiring begins to fail. In order to keep these aging systems operational, MDOT SHA provides thousands of dollars in routine lighting maintenance while at the same time program funds for the complete replacement of the systems to include all underground wiring, light poles, fixtures and control cabinets. Replacing an entire lighting system at one interchange can cost one (1) million dollars, or more.
The roadway lighting outages at the above subject interchange are an ongoing maintenance item and falls into the category of aging infrastructure as mentioned above. Additionally, MDOT SHA has discovered that a utility contractor installed fiber optic cable at this interchange and severely damaged the underground electrical conduits. Please keep in mind that restoration of large interchange outages is labor-intensive. Many customers assume that overhead streetlight outages are simply the result of bulbs/fixtures requiring replacement; however, the problems usually reside in the subsurface electrical cabling and circuitry at the power source(s). Locating and correcting these issues can be very time consuming. It can take many months to restore lighting at one interchange. Our Maintenance contractor will continue working to repair the underground electrical faults in order to restore the roadway lighting by August 1, 2019.
Thank you again for bringing this concern to our attention. If you have questions or concerns, please contact me at 301-624-8113, toll free at 800-635-5119 or via email at dclutter@sha.state.md.us. I will be pleased to assist you."
