For just a few feet, not enough room for car and bike side-by-side in through lane. Could also be improved with pavement marking to reinforce right lane right turn only.
This whole intersection is due to be redesigned & reconstructed as soon as the museum is close to being done when East Circle Dr. will also be getting reconstructed. From the preliminary designs I've seen there'll be a new signal to help move traffic more safely from E. Circle Dr. onto Farm Ln. timed with the signal on M-43/ Grand River.
I heard a verbal report on this intersection at a meetg recently; funding didn't allow for the reconstruction work here which they had originally planned. It's now scheduled for reconstruction in 2015.
I personally dread this part of the road. When there are many students on the sidewalks, I ride my bike in the street here, either in the morning, going to work on campus, and in the evening, going home from work. I have had drivers honk at me and yell at me to get on the sidewalk. Meanwhile, cars backing out of the parking spots can't see me on my bike, so I have to be very careful and observant, watching for those cars that might be backing out. I find it ironic that there is a sign at this intersection stating that MSU has been awarded the Bike Friendly campus award. Perhaps, but actually not right here at this dangerous and scary pathway/intersection. As the road is breaking up with potholes, it is actually getting worse. I notice most student bike riders will NOT ride in the street here (I am not a student; I wear a helmet). I think the students know, without a helmet on, riding here would be Russian roulette. I too try to stay on the sidewalk at this intersection, even with reflective gear, a helmet, and lights. The sidewalk is just plain safer. The drivers are very aggressive trying to get to work or leave campus in the evening, and the road conditions here are terrible for bike riders, so it is a bad mix all around.
At this spot, taking the lane is the best option if you don't want to violate university policy. I do it every time I bike through there and it has been working well for me. I stopped caring about honking cars at this spot a long time ago.
