The American Flag at Fort Wooster is never lowered but it's not illuminated either. Lights would be such an easy fix and shows respect to the veterans in the area, as well as follows appropriate flag protection

Actually, the flag is regularly lowered according to the State guidelines regarding half mast notifications. There is some illumination at night from the very bright LED on the corner of Beacon & Clarendon, but you are correct in noting that the flag should be illuminated directly if it is going to fly at night. The flag is maintained by the Friends of Fort Wooster; a non-profit neighborhood group. The City of New Haven had nothing to do with erecting the flagpole or putting up the flag. Traditional direct illumination is not currently possible because there is no power inside the park. A solar option is under consideration but there are limits as to where we can place the light due to trees. The first ground solar unit was destroyed by vandals. The flag halyards are encased in the pole, limiting the options of solar lighting originating from the pole. We are happy to take any additional suggestions, and/or donations. Many of these lights are extremely expensive and, as noted, we are small volunteer group. Visit www.fortwooster.com or visit us on Facebook for more information
If the city wants to help out by installing a light fixture, we would be thrilled.
Thanks.
